After years of mouth breathing (dry mouth), got cured but tongue is coated and bb won't go away

Post by Szabo »

Hello there.

I've been a mouth-breather for most of my life due irritable sinuses/rhinitis. I've used all kinds of medications but they didn't help. I'm in my mid 20's and even though I completely stopped all medications the rhinitis cured spontaneously. Funnily enough my uncle had asthma no one could help too and it went away spontaneously too. Doctors said it could be a syndrome that's not known yet (very rare and genetically inheritable).

Anyway, that sinus problem is 100% fixed now, I breathe only through my nose, but my tongue has these enlarged and white papillae that are causing bb. The 'round' ones are completely normal, the ones that are white are the hair-like ones, especially in the back of my tongue they're numerous, long and you can clearly see it's white (it's not yellowish/grayish/pinkish, it's bright pure white, very evident). On the front they're shorter but they're white too. It's not candida/thrush. I can't scrape it off and dentists and physicians don't know what could be done except better oral hygiene, but I've been brushing my tongue more than ten times a day.

When I wash my mouth with hydrogen peroxide the bb gets a bit better. I've taken probiotics and I'm going to buy more just in case, although I don't think that's gonna make a difference. I'm going to see an ear nose and throat doctor in a few weeks, but honestly I don't expect a solution because so far it's always the same thing, they either think it's thrush what I assure you it's not, or just dismiss it with a 'practice better oral hygiene' note, what's insulting. I've tried everything you can imagine even brushing with baking soda until it bleeds but there's no way to get rid of it. Even Tazorac which was recommended in another forum.

The theory is that the hairy papillae got 'closed' from the years of mouth breathing and have debris stuck in them thus the white color, but I'm not 100% convinced it's that, it seems to me the papillae themselves are white or something, but that was dismissed by the doctors with the argument that if their ends were 'dead tissue' they wouldn't hold in place.

I'm quite sad with this situation, I don't know how to explain it better, and I think I have an extremely rare condition because I literally spent all the money I had going from one specialist to another and it's always the same thing, since it's a 'benign condition', I should just practice good hygiene and try to mask the bad breath. I want to try to get rid of it though... I'm really disappointed with the doctors so far because obviously the bad odor has an origin, either bacteria trapped in the papillae or whatever origin it has. It's a simple cause-effect thing, I'd like to know exactly what's the cause and get rid of it. My saliva and nasal mucus don't smell and I had endoscopy recently and my tonsils are clean, these facts along with the symptoms allow me to conclude with substantial certainty that the cause is the abnormal papillae, which is the only abnormal thing I have, and the bad odor is probably some kinda gas that's being released by them, I just don't know if it's bacteria trapped there that's releasing it, or I don't know... maybe the papillae developed some protection mechanism from the mouth breathing times that smells bad or something. I'm no doctor though so maybe that's not a possibility. If it's microorganisms, they're not ordinary and they're persistent as hell. Maybe some viral infection or something...

There's another point which is aesthetically my tongue looks really bad. In the front it's quite OK although you can see the discoloration, but in the back it looks really bad. When I eat anything that has colorant my tongue will easily tint, even mouth washers will dye my tongue as if I had eaten a pack of kool-aid.

So, since this forum has lots of people who have been fighting bb and somewhat similar tongue conditions, I humbly ask you guys, what do you think I could try? What are you guys using to try and fight bb off when it's caused by tongue conditions like that? I'd really like some recommendations on stuff to try, I feel very bad with this bb and bad looking tongue, I just want to live a little, I don't want to turn 30 never being in a relationship and subsequently turn into an old bearded mad hoarder ... I'm going to try grapefruit seed extract this week which was recommended by a friend but I'm not very confident too.

Thank you in advance.

i am not cured but here are the things i do to control my bb (these gave me confidence to at least have close-range conversations with people, even in enclosed small rooms):

1. brushing the back of my tongue. i use a bent soft-bristled toothbrush to brush the back (not just the top, i go as far back as i possibly can). i put a bit of toothpaste on the brush and brush for about 2 mins making sure i get to the middle part and the sides. i do this everytime i brush. you HAVE to overcome your gag reflex, it will happen in time.
2. tongue scraping. i also do this each time i brush.
3. gargle with diluted bleach solution. i do this in the morning only.
4. DRASTICALLY reduce sugar intake. emphasis on the DRASTICALLY.
5. Grapefruit seed extract.
6. Lots of water. LOTS and FREQUENTLY. take small sips every few minutes. this is important.
7. Kefir Milk every night. i culture my own kefir since yogurt and probiotic supplements can get pretty expensive.
8. Oral Probiotic. I will not name the brand, there are several brands out there. This is very expensive though (especially since i had to purchase it from outside the US). I am on my first month using it and seems to be worth it.
9. i had my tonsils removed a year ago because i was forming tonsil stones. This will not cure your bb (so don't get your hopes up) but i think it is still a must-do if you are forming tonsil stones.
10. this should have been on top of the list but i forgot. brush your teeth and FLOSS after eating ANYTHING. if you have bb, i think it is common sense to make sure you have pristine dental cleaning habits. try to use a toothpaste with xylitol, it leaves a fresher feeling in my mouth longer than when using other toothpastes without it.
11. STOP STOP STOP using Listerine or any other alcohol-based mouthwashes. Stop taking coffee, too. These will dry out your mouth.

the list seems very long but each of the items here are fairly easy to do. also, except for the oral probiotics and the tonsil removal surgery, you won't be spending much to keep your bb in check.

Do you have nasal BB too?

Every morning I scraped off a thick white coating. I can't do anything about the white fury stuff left behind. Sometimes my tongue gets pink (normal) throughout the day, but my bad breath remains.

Nothing we did work, that's why we are all here.

Thank you for that list. I do most of that already except the kefir milk and tonsillectomy (I don't have stones). The bleach solution also got me wondering... if the problem is really bacteria in the mouth, can't we effectively sterilize our mouth by washing (for some hours) with sodium hypochlorite? I wouldn't use bleach or any other commercial grade cleaning product though since I'm sure they contain impurities. Do you have the enlarged pale filiform papillae too?

Nope, thankfully I don't have nasal BB as far as I know. I don't have a 'scrapable' coating in fact. I only have the white furry stuff. In the morning there's a bit of 'foam' over my tongue but nothing major. I wonder if that's normal and if it's caused solely by friction or bacterial emissions. Again, if the problem is solely bacterial, I don't see why we can't just sterilize our mouth completely. I'm pretty sure it'd take some time for bacteria to reproduce to substantial levels again, at which point we could just do that again. Maybe that's unpractical because you'd have to wash for long periods many times a day though. Thank you for your reply.

hey guys, I have this problem too along with much more symptoms. For a coated tongue, I brush twice a day with white vinegar. This really helps a lot in controlling the bacteria from clogging my tongue when I wake up. If i missed scraping my tongue the before night, the next morning I can see white stuff especially on the back of my tongue. I use a Tung brush and a normal scraper for my routine.

1) scrape the tongue first and then brush it with white vinegar (dont brush your teeth with white vinegar)
2) scrape the tongue first and then brush it with clear water
3) scrape the tongue first and then brush it with Tung gel

Do gently else you'll end up cutting your tongue. As you can see, I am insisting to scrape first and then brush it, that scraping clears off the residue from tongue so while brushing we can ensure, we are hitting the tongue directly and not on the thick slimy residue. Result is we will have a clear pink tongue :). Any questions, please feel free to shoot out.
