Clueless Doctors

Post by Mac »

After seeing an ENT specialist last November and him saying he'd write a letter to request a tonsillectomy, I've heard nothing since. I had no joy with the ENT department at the hospital so I went to see my GP again. The GP showed me the letter and it said that it would be difficult to get funding for the surgery because there is no 'clinical basis'. What the ***k?! It just feels like I've been fobbed off in the hope that I won't pursue it further. I asked for my GP to refer me again and he was reluctant, again, so I told him I don't want to live this way anymore and how much it's affected my confidence. He seemed to listen a bit more then. Anyway, he said he'd request an appointment and I've not heard anything yet. This was 8 days ago.

I just feel like doctors haven't got a clue about this condition or they think it's a non-issue. I mean no clinical basis? They don't know it ruins lives and people contemplate s*****e and I would bet money that some have killed themselves. I've considered it myself and it still crosses my mind, although I never would. I'm so pissed off. I pay my taxes and they're denying me something which could improve my life no end.

I'm not letting this go anyway. I'm going to make a nuisance of myself and write letters to my MP and the Health Secretary if necessary. I'll bring this forum to their attention aswell so they can see for themselves the struggles people go through on a day to day basis.

Don't even think about s*****e. Trust me, I've tried it, and I could have died had the belt not snapped. You, I, we, all have so much more to live for. I'd rather live the rest of my life with bad breath, than to kill myself because of it. Doctors don't listen, you're right. I went to an ENT once and told him about my tonsil stones, and he brushed it off and said gargle with hydrogen peroxide and they'll go away. I once had a dentist tell me I didn't have bad breath. How is that possible when people say rude things to me about it? How is that possible when my sibling has even admitted that my bad breath exist? Why don't doctors just be honest and say they don't know how to fix it? Instead, they lie to say and say you're delusional or it's all in your head and they you don't have bad breath. They do this, because they don't have a solution.

Hi Mac….Let me just begin by saying that s*****e is not the solution, don’t let this beat you up, just continue searching for the cure and hopefully you’ll find it someday, don’t give up!!....But I can completely understand your frustration! I had to chase my GI for 3 weeks so that he can write me the script he'd promised to send me! I felt that he was deliberately ignoring my calls so on my last attempt I called his nurse and demanded an explanation as to why I was being ignored and I went off at her and at how unprofessional and unethical this doc was and how completely pissed off I was to have wasted my time and money to see him, so she kept apologising and making excuses for him which I told her I didn’t care to know but anyway within a day she calls me back to say that my script was sent out to the pharmacy for me to collect with the meds (which were useless by the way). It was obvious to me that this doctor didn't take me seriously, although he seemed as though he was at the time of the appointment! But that’s the problem is that most - if not all - of those a**holes doc’s out there whether it’s the gp's, specialists, dentists or the whole medical field, they either have no clue how to treat our condition or just don’t consider it to be a serious and life debilitating ailment, therefore they don’t bother with us, we’re just a small statistic to them, not worth the money put into researches or treatments. So unfortunately we're in this fight alone!

Is this because you’re going as a public patient? Are you able to get approval if you go as a private patient and pay for it?

I completely encourage you to do so, someone’s ought to take us seriously and consider that this is a serious condition that has a severe impact on the sufferer’s life!!

Thanks coconut and sadmum. No, I wouldn't kill myself but you're right I shouldn't even think about it. But finding out recently a friend has let me down and pushing myself through my comfort zone with a lot of things, not just this, I guess I'm a little bit more vulnerable than normal. Good that you're still with us coconuthead.

I've tried gargling with hydrogen peroxide and it doesn't work for me. And it burns my mouth. I apply it directly with cotton wool to my tonsils which works better.

Sadmum, I don't know if I would get approval if I went private. I did look into it and it's £250 for a consultation and I've read something like £2000 for tonsillectomy. Which I can't pay for at the moment. Anyway, I got a letter about an appointment for later this month so lets see what happens. I'm preparing myself to give him some shit!
