is it possible that eating food containing vinegar helps a little? I had lots of dijon mustard yesterday and i swear my breath today doesnt taste as bad as usual. ****ing love Dijon Mustard.

edit: anyone can confirm this? i wanna see if i'm crazy or not. Again last nite i had a really heavy meal (with dijon mustard), the taste in my mouth should be awful but it's not so bad. I had dismissed the 'lack of acid' theory since HCL didn't help at all but maybe HCL supps are just worthless and simple vinegar is more effective? I'm gonna get a bottle of pure vinegar today and drink some before and after meals. At least if that helps, i will know what the problem is and go from there.

Archimonde,

Could it be that the vinegar is changing the acidity in your mouth and making it a less pleasant place for the bad bacteria? I notice that when I've been drinking the night before my breath is usually a lot better the next day. How long does the good effect from the mustard last?

Snoopsister,

I started taking the Pepto-Bismol on xmas day due to indigestion from eating loads of crappy food. I've had really bad indigestion ever since, mainly because my diet still isn't great (I'm starting on a low carb diet again on Monday). I've always had stomach problems (constipation, bloating etc). The indigestion is the usual buring and I've had some stomach pain too.

Snobuni, what kind of alcohol do you drink? I thought beer and wine made bb worse. I don't drink much so i don't know.

Archimonde,

I only drink vodka and soda, absolutely no beer or wine as it makes my bb 100 times worse. The vodka and soda gets rid of my bb almost instantly.

I've noticed that drinking hard liquor improves things the day after as well. I'd guess it's from the alcohol killing off bacteria in the throat. Can't imagine what else it would be.

How safe is taking that much bismuth long-term?

Archimonide,

u certainly are not crazy. There are lots of articles referring vinegar as a remedy for bb. I haven`t tried it and if I would, I would just use it as mouthwash or to gargle with; I wouldn`t drink it since I already have overproduction of stomach acid and do not need to increase it.

Snoopsister,

I didn't have a routine at first, I was just taking them when the indigestion struck. Now I've been taking 2 after breakfast after I've cleaned my teeth, 1 or 2 after lunch and either 1 or 2 after tea and/or leaving it til I'm in bed to take them, after cleaning my teeth. So I'm taking between about 5 and 8 a day.

I don't know about the long-term effects of doing this, but someone on a previous thread said he'd been doing it for a long time without any bad effects. I have been quite bloated and constipated, but then I'm always quite bloated and constipated, especially when I eat crappy food so I'm not putting this down to the Pepto-Bismol alone. When I improve my diet, as of tomorrow, I expect these things will ease off.

As far as I'm concerned, so far, any side effects are outweighed by the improvement in my bb. I'm seeing a faint speck of light at the end of the tunnel for the first time in 20 years. :)

Just some info I found...
Bismuth therapy has shown efficacy against two major gastrointestinal disorders: peptic ulcer disease and diarrhea. In peptic ulcer disease it is as effective as the H2-receptor antagonists, costs considerably less, and offers a lower rate of relapse. When Helicobacter pylori is implicated, bismuth acts as an antimicrobial agent, suppressing the organism but not eliminating it. In recent studies, bismuth compounds have been used with conventional antibiotics, producing elimination of the organism, histological improvement, and amelioration of symptoms for periods longer than one year. Bismuth subsalicylate has shown modest efficacy in treating traveler's diarrhea and acute and chronic diarrhea in children, and it is effective prophylactically for traveler's diarrhea. An epidemic of neurological toxicity was reported in France in the 1970's with prolonged bismuth treatment, usually bismuth subgallate and subnitrate. Such toxicity has been rare with bismuth subsalicylate and colloidal bismuth subcitrate. However, recent studies have demonstrated intestinal absorption of bismuth (about 0.2% of the ingested dose) and sequestration of this heavy metal in multiple tissue sites, even occurring with conventional dosing over a 6-week period. These findings have inspired recommendations that treatment periods with any bismuth-containing compound should last no longer than 6-8 weeks, followed by 8-week bismuth-free intervals.

Thanks for the info Girlie Girl. So it looks like 2 months on followed by 2 months off would be the sensible thing to do.

Hi, Snobuni,

How is your sinus PND? What do you take to control it?

Drastic,

I don't have much PND (not that I notice anyway), but the mucous I do have smells weird. I've a deviated septum, so I'm wondering if this traps mucous on one side and causes it to stagnant in my nostril/sinuses. I've tried nasal irrigation and a steriod nasal spray to open up my nostrils, but these don't make any difference.

I've just ordered some sinus drops that are suppose to get rid of sinus infections, but I'm not convinced they'll do anything. Anything is worth a go once though I suppose.

I do wonder if the medication my GP gave me will have an effect on this problem, but I think the sinuses are hard to get at with antibiotics.
