I'd add looking into TMAU and other metabolic disorders. There's a good support forum on bodyodorsupport.com for people with breath and body odor problems. TMAU can be subjective. It may explain why some people can notice your odor (objectively confirm), while others really can't. Why it comes on suddenly and intermitanty in some cases.

Worth looking into for some people here. Overall a good post here.

Sure, I imagine they can take a culture and check for anything, as long as you get a doctor who is willing to do it.

Perhaps it is bacterial and not fungal. How much longer do you have until you finish the anti fungal pills, and how is your diet while you are taking them?

I've heard that people who follow the high protein, no carb diet get bad breath. Something about ketosis???
http://women.webmd.com/guide/high-protein-low-carbohydrate-diets wrote:Unhealthy metabolic state (ketosis). Low carb diets can cause your body to go into a dangerous metabolic state called ketosis since your body burns fat instead of glucose for energy. During ketosis, the body forms substances known as ketones, which can cause organs to fail and result in gout, kidney stones, or kidney failure. Ketones can also dull a person's appetite, cause nausea and bad breath. Ketosis can be prevented by eating at least 100 grams of carbohydrates a day.

I just wanted to add achlorhydria & hypochlorhydria to the list of things you should check for when trying to figure out what is causing your bad breath.

Thanks halitosisix for mentioning them. :)

ALmost all of the BB ckeck list

Post by Renato »

Hi all, this is my second post in here, I found this site great and it gave me hope to find a cure someday.

I have BB since my childhood, Im in my 30's now and still suffering of that.

I would like to share my experience with some of the points listed in the check list kindly posted by KeepTrying09 .

I had my wisdsom teeth removed 10 years ago.
I had my tonsils removed 15 years ago.

I have been done two endoscopies to my esophagous which resulted normal. One 15 years ago and the other done just the last year.

I have been checked for acid reflux, with no ovious signals.

I have been checked for peristaltic motility of the esophagous, which resulted normal.

I have taken medicines for acid reflux with no results.

My symptoms are:

Chronic BB
Sensation of fullness
Sensation of reflux( but no acid reflux)
White coated tongue ( yet hours after scraping with a tongue brush).

Worse BB on mornings

Bad taste, worst when eating food rich in sugar, milk or starch.

I'm lactose intolerant

ALmost all fruits(apple, orange, melon, water melon, pears, grapes , etc) cause me excesive gases so I avoid them.

When lying down on my sides I feel fluid coming up to my esophagus, but Drs found nothing when they inserted a probe into my esophagous to sense fluids during bed time.

I use mouth washes which makes me feel my mouth fresh and better taste, but the BB breath still there ( I think is comes from my back throat). Note: (when I accidentally swallow a little of the Thera breath mouth wash, makes my BB worse)

I have been prescribed with a strong oral antifungus to treat a onicomycosis last year ( the drug was Terbinafine) taken for three months, which cure my nail problem but not my bad breath.

I have noticed that oral antibiotics can cure my BB just during the time taking the medicine, but it comes back after stopping the treatment.

SO now I still think that my problem is overgrowth of bacteria in my mouth and throat, but the oringin may be from my stomach or intestine. So finding the cure of this may cure my BB

I have suggested to my doctors to perform the Fundoplication
(Anti-Reflux Surgery), which can tightly close the sphinter between my esophagus and stomach and avoid bad breath coming up to my mouth, but obviously they have denied to perform such as surgery (two Drs).

My Dr last week prescribed me carefate to treat possible bile reflux and also to be tested for Helicobater pilory. I stated my treatment today and I will know the lab results next week.

Im also planning to see the ENT to have my lingual tonsils removed (as I learned from this site that could be a possible cause, if not the cause, it may attenuate the BB).

I will keep posting to any positive
results.

Sorry for my bad english, Im a spanish speaker.

Carafate made my BB worst

Post by Renato »

Just to let all you know.

my reflux (no acidic) was not responding with Carafate (supposedly to neutralize bile reflux), but it made my BB worst.
I think it happened just because the supension is extremely sweet and it seems that it was fermented for the bacteria in my mouth and troath/esophagous.

My BB became worst and my taste horrible just after the fist oral dosis. Im in the third day treatment and thinking to stop.

May be hypochloridia is my problem.

I think these "specialist" don't like dealing with us because of the smell. They rather stay away from us.

This list resonates with me. I have done most of the tests you have, and your explanation of symptoms and results are extremely similar to mine. Monitoring the esophagus, looking for bile/acid reflux, having tonsils checked (doctors won't touch mine, no matter what), doctors will not perform the spincter surgery etc. The only difference is that my BB came on only 5 years ago. I am also in my 30s.

I'd guess you are in the small group of people who are fructose/lactose intolerant.
All the other tests I've done also show no signs of any problems.

For you, I'd suggest at least confirming you are fructose intolerant, or even have fructose malabsorption, so you can avoid eating things that you 'think' may be helping you, as I did. From there you might try a stricter diet, to see if symptoms stop over time, then you might slowly start introducing foods.

I believe a strict diet (with well timed and portioned meals) will make you feel better over 8-9 days. Don't be disappointed if you still receive negative public reaction. I think you will feel better way before you smell better... or at least that's my guess.

Keep in mind, Individuals respond so differently to odor, so you can't judge whether you're getting better based on the severity of reaction. I like to gauge myself, by examining my tongue, the viscosity and taste of my saliva, checking my ears for moistness, and having an overall good stomach feeling, before and after eating... no bloating, no fake hunger pangs. If I can maintain these healthy symptoms over time, I feel I am on the right track.

still suffering

Post by Renato »

Thanks Elliot for your advice.

There was something interesting, four months ago I tried to change my diet by eating just little on dinners. I included some vegetables and little meat. The vegetables caused me bloating which exacerbated my BB. I kept this diet for two months until I definitively removed the vegetables. I also avoid eggs, milk derivatives and meats at nights since these cause me the worst of the BB.

I really think now overgrown of bacteria (perhaps in lingual tonsil) has to be related with the reflux.

I do not know what is causing me the reflux, but almost all the time a feel this fluid in my throat. When I drink water, immediately I can feel the water coming back to my esophagus.

Im planning to ask Dr to perform full monitoring of stomach and intestines and see if they agree.

I started taking betaine-HCl to role out the posibility of achloridia just two hours ago.

Did you find the cause of your reflux?

I am not gonna lie , i find it very hard to motivate my self to brush my teeth 2+ times a day when i see absolutely no improvement in my bb. I usually spend 15-25 mins in restroom brushing my teeth and when i come out get in the car with my mom withing 5mins of brushing my teeth and i notice the reactions right away. It makes it feel like i just wasted 25 minutes of my life.
