Did you know these?

Post by aydinmur »

According to me (1)

- Despite 3 of 4 persons over the world, suffer from halitosis, It is assumed nonexist.

- Halitosis is different from bad breath odor.

- Cigar causes dozens of life threating diseases. it must be left, but we have not enough evidence that cigar causes halitosis.

- Chewing gum causes halitosis if it does not contain zinc.

- Antiseptic rinses can not be used more than 1 week.

- Onion causes onion smell, but not halitosis. Halitosis is endogen.

- Many dentifrices and rinses do not decrease halitosis, while somes increase.

- Only zinc containing dentifrices and rinses may decrease halitosis.

- Gingivitis makes halitosis but periodontitis mostly not.

- Halitosis makes periodontitis. Further more, with similar mechanisms, halitosis probably may cause systemic diseases.

- Cleaning dental stones and plaques by dentist decreases type 1 halitosis 26-36%,
Tongue brushing ~42%
Teeth brushing ~33%
Tongue scraping <40%

- None of above affects type 3,4 and 5 halitosis.

- Alcohol (even one mililiter) absolutely enhances halitosis with more than 3 mechansisms

- Waters sinus roentgens dont enough show sinuses are good.

- Every minute, 0.7 ml of air leaks from stomach to mouth if we sit on a chair. 0.1 ml/min air, if we lay on a bed. This is for healthly individuals, not for reflux patients.

- There is not convincing clues about any corelation between obesity and halitosis or stress and halitosis.

Hi Aydinmur,
When you say talk about breath odour v halitosis do you mean breath odour to be transient and caused by external factors..ie: cigarettes, onions etc?

Chewing Gum causes halitosis...this is interesting....would you mind elaborating on this..as a great many of us rely on gum to mask the bad odour

Thanks

I have classified halitosis here: viewtopic.php?t=2814

Latex like polysulphid chains in chewing gums are easy broken to sulphide monomers by bacteria. We know sulphide have bad odor. This is the reason why chewing gum increases halitosis. However, zinc containing chewing gums decreases halitosis.

I would like to share a study from Yaegaki (2002). Read legend of the figure : http://agizkokusu.net/garbage/gum.jpg

Hope helps

THanks. If you don't mind, I'd like to know what you think about the use of CHLORHEXIDINE for tongue related halitosis.

There are 2 problems with chlorohexidine (chx):

(1) We can not use chx for more than 1 week. Because of:
- (a) It causes brown dicoloration of mucosa or teeth
- (b) Bacterial patern changes, yeasts invade the mouth

(2) There is not good formulation for chx rinse. Many of chx rinses ufortunately contain alcohol.

You know, if alcohol enters a mouth , it exactly smells bad. In my country there are 24 of chx containing rinses. One of 24 is alcohol free.

By the way, There is a popular rinse over the world that contains cetylpyridinium + domiphen bromur + alcohol. Despite good and synergic antiseptics present, this formulation has no effect on halitosis because of alcohol.

Summary: Use alcohol free chx rinses for 1 week is useful for Type 1 halitosis.

Dear Murat
Thanks. Can I please ask if chlorhexidine digluconate are useful ingredients in a mouthwash for eradicating or lessening bad breath, especially relating to Type 1 cases. Many Thanks

hello everyone!

i recently found a (n unfortunately german) study in which was shown that there's no difference in effects of two mouthwashes, one containing alcohol and one not. The active ingredients were 0,05 % Cetylpyridiniumchloride (CPC) and 0,1 % Zincchloride.

Both mouthwashes worked well, decreased in the same amount measured sulphur-compounds. Alcohol made no difference! I think thats quite interesting...

Coffe is terrible for BB type III suffers like me.

Fluids from your stomach will end up on your throat and mouth exacerbating BB.

Please, BB type-III suffers do not try it.
