Metronidazole
I know the general consensus is that antibiotics should be avoided as they will probably have no long term effect and can even exascerbate problems. I expect this will probably happen and am not advocating this for anyone else. I am 10 days into a 14 day course of metronidazole tablets (400mg, 3 tablets a day).
My breath was improved after a day on the course and currently on day 10, is completely fresh. The only remaining odour is nasal, which is a different smell, but I attribute this to long term use of nasal sprays and sinus flushes (due to post nasal drip) which have caused irritation in the left nasal passage which will not clear up. My GP and an ENT doctor are adamant that this is not an infection so what is going on im not sure!
My question is, if after completing the metronidazole treatment my bad breath returns, does the fact that the antibiotics worked rule out any causes or am I back to square one?

If you have a chance, do a quick search around the site. Some people have been cured by taking vitamin C.
A year or so ago I purchased Dr. Katz's expensive powder probiotics. Cost me $80 bucks with shipping and handling. I can't remember whether I complained on his website or I found an email address somewhere but whomever got it must've forwarded it to him. He himself wrote me back telling me to also try vitamins c and d. I've practically overdosed on those vitamins and they still haven't helped me, but give it a try. You never know.

I did a food intolerance test last year and was told that the only thing that came up was a mild intolerance to peppers. To be honest I dont know how seriously to take that as I have never noticed any reactions and dont eat peppers regularly enough to be any cause for concern.
It could be tonsil stones yes but I have only ever found one about a month ago when I had a bad chest and coughed one up. The odour seems to comes from deep down my throat rather than within the mouth so this would make sense.
How would you go about testing for acid reflux? Would that be something you could only get checked by a GP? In the UK we have great GP services but when it comes to halitosis they haven't got a clue. All the tests I have done through my GP have been at my request after information I got on this site.
I tried the K Force products for 3 months after xmas this year. Like most people, they worked for a week and then inexplicably had no effect. It cost me a small fortune to have the oral chroma/halimeter test at the same time, and my readings where above the threshold for dimethly sulfide only. The other 2 gases being tested (forget the names) always came out at 0.
I personally would avoid crushing them up as part of a nasal irrigation routine, as I say my nasal odour only began after all of those nasal flushes and sprays. Even now I am on antibiotics the nasal odour is unchanged. I am due to be having septoplasty operation in a few months so hopefully that may help.
I take it from the non response to my original question, if metronadizole only clears up halitosis temporarily this doesn't tell us anything to help with a process of elimination to find the source of the problem?
I've experienced the same, months ago. I used metronidazole for 2 weeks, during that time I was completely bb free. A day after I stopped taking the medicine, bb came back. I was H.pylori positive, had gastritis and acid reflux.
I think doctors, especially G.I. docs can't see the potential. Every major city needs to have a bb-cure center that include dentists, ENT and GI specialists. Or forget about bb-cure centers, guidance from a GI specialist alone would mean a lot.
Most type-1 halitosis sufferers (dental-related) can find cure during their routine search. Go see a dentists, fix cavities, remove wisdom teeth, floss, brush etc. Don't think type-1 halitosis is much of a mistery. I believe most of us are having bacterial imbalance issues which needs G.I. expertise to solve. We are trying to help each other with very limited knowledge and no experience. Are there any G.I. specialists that have knowledge and experience enough to help us? Yes I believe there are. The problem is, how do we find them.
if you use this antibiotic, you must use a rinse daily (morning and night) to maintain the fresh mouth afterwards or your bb will eventually come back once the bacteria repopulate. this is when rinses like smartmouth and chlorine dioxide work. just use a zinc or chlorine dioxide rinse 5 days a week, and chlorhexidine 2 days a week. probiotics at this time is a good idea too.
it's about getting rid of the anaerobic bacteria and then maintaining the low count through rinses in order to keep them from repopulating. this is if you have type 1 bb (oral problem)
Nasal odour has remained throughout. To explain, the odour is noticeable just by touching within the nostril (left more so than right) and seeps a clearless liquid from the nostril walls. The smell on a bad day is slightly fishy and sometimes more of a garbage type smell. Not very pleasant and im not sure whether this is noticeable to anyone else. I have had this for around 6 months. I think this is due to irritation I have caused with sprays an flushes etc as I have said before, but it may be a natural progression of whatever my underlying cause is, who knows.
I agree Compor. As we all know, what falls into the void of proper support and testing - pseudo science and charlatans which most of us have been stung by before.
Just to add, I have also suffered from digestion problems for a number of years, irregular bowel movements, constipation etc. This has greatly improved during the metronadizole treatment as to be expected.
To try and quantify it, from how it was 3 weeks ago I have had probably a 40% improvement during the worst days of last week to 95% better today (if only it would remain like this but I know it wont). This surprised me as I thought if the halitosis would return back to how it was before there would be a gradual trend but it has been very up and down.
Nasal odour is slightly improved but perhaps naively I treat this as a completely separate issue .
I know the subject of metrodanizole has been covered extensively on the site before so I cant really add anything of much interest that isn't already known but I guess its always worth pooling our information together.
My ENT appointment is the next date on my diary so hopefully I will start to find some answers.
