LOG: Nasal Irrigation vs Mucous & Bad Breath

Post by badbreath0202YES »

edit: change the subject title from RE: My story, and what I did to cure my breath to LOG: Nasal Irrigation vs Mucous & Bad Breath

I've forgotten the password for my other account, sorry. I have both bad news and good news!

Bad news, the flossing and crazy oral hygiene died out and my bad breath returned.

Good news, I revisited my old friend nasal irrigation but this time bought a legitimate 'squeeze bottle' version on the internet, as opposed to my previous gravity mechanised sports bottle (a normal bottle). Together with half a teaspoon of baking powder and half a teaspoon of sea salt, I no longer have bad breath during the day or even in the morning! I use it 3x a day. I even went to visit a new dentist and a new doctor today and the dentist said my teeth and gums were healthy, though I have a case of TMJ*, and the doctor said my tongue was a healthy pink colour and that my breath didn't smell!

*They made a mold for me and in 2weeks+/- time it will be ready for me to wear at night!

P.S. I posted in the general sections under the name 'tongogongo'. It's been a week so far, but I will keep this post updated! Hopefully everytime with good news!

Good to hear!

I'd like to try that nasal irrigator you're using.. I've been too afraid to use my neti pot ever since I got an absolutely awful ear infection this past year.

So, what's a TMJ? Tongue and Mouth Jaundice? :-k

Hi Mike! TMJ is Temporomandibular joint disorder. For me it means when I'm eating food and yawning my jaw will often click and crunch about, and sometimes it gets sore. Untreated it can lead to gum and tooth problems, but the dentist said my gum and teeth were still healthy.

The nasal irrigator im using is called Sinus Rinse, I think it's relatively cheap and it's working for me! It comes with pre-mixed solutions though once you've finished them its cheaper and (for me at least) more convenient to make them myself, using about 1/2 tsp sea salt and 1/2 tsp baking powder.

You don't have to use this specific bottle but it may work best. In the past I used a regular water bottle with a sports cap but it didn't do anything for my bad breath. There wasn't enough pressure in the bottle to force out the dirty boogers and thick mucous.

Hope that helps! I am in no way affiliated with this brand.

Badbreath02 how long till you noticed a improvement on your breath? 2 months ago I purshased a sinussence ( nasal irrigator) and It didn't do much for me, then again I wouldn't use it 3 times a day... So I ask what symptoms of bb did you have? Was it cronic, mild etc...

Hi glamourgirl,

The first day I used it my breath stank like mad. It was a different smell I had ever smelt before. I cleared out crazy amounts of thick gooey dark green mucous, and I guess the rapid change gave off a weird effect. The day after that the smell went away.

I had very bad breath, the sort that can hit its peak in about 30 minutes after drenching my mouth in the mintiest moutwash known to man.

Hi,
1) Did your dentist or physician diagnosed you with sinus infection or you diagnosed on your own?
If on your own, could you tell us how?
I have had several appointments with my doctor/ 2 ENT specialist for sinus check up, but was never diagnosed with Sinus.

2) Did you have bb from mouth or from nose or from both?

@Tibya

Hi Tibya,

I have not been diagnosed with any sinus infection(s). I have both hayfever and asthma. Though I don't take medications for either of them (I'm relatively fit and able).

I think I have post nasal drip. My doctor agreed but has not formally diagnosed me with it. My ENT has looked at my nose before and has totally ignored my concerns. ENT's are rubbish.

To my knowledge my bad breath only came from my mouth.

Thanks a lot. Your feed back is helpful, because my 2 different ENTs ignored my concern too. Few months back I was looking into nasal irrigation with neti pot, but as I do not have any nasal congestion, I dropped that idea.With my tongue coated white, I did suspect post nasal drip, but my physician ruled that out and I am still with bb. Thanks again.

badbreath02 congrats.

Did you ever get any of that thick green mucus before you started this latest form of irrigation?

@halitosisux

Thanks!

Yes I've always had thick green mucous build-up in the mornings, every morning. Especially during the summer when my hayfever kicks in. This morning it was horrible, even after using the bottle twice i'm now still blowing thin white mucous into tissues. If its an infection I guess it'd go away, but I don't think it is. My breath is still clean though :D!

Yeah, green mucus means that bacteria are involved. You might have an infection or maybe there's an anatomical reason which allow bacteria to proliferate in your nose. There's allergic reactions too which could allow bacteria to get involved in this way.
Well, I'm really happy for you that you've found a way to manage it. Be careful with spraying water up into the nose though, expecially if there's all this bacteria up there. You should really try to find out what's going on and whether it's possible to find a way to deal with it permanently.

Thanks! I'm really happy too. I think i'll keep up with the flushing and see if I can clean the infecton(?) away. If the mucous doesn't start thinning out or my bb comes back, I will make an appointment to see a new ENT.

How I wish I also had green mucus... But mine is colourless. I've been for a scan - sinuses clear. Then my ENT used a camera to look into my nose - diagnosis: sinuses clear.

However, I have chronic pain in my eyebrow ridge which apparently is the frontal sinuses. So, there must be some kind of infection. I also tend to have pnd. Anybody else who has problems with frontal sinuses?

@jen

Hi Jen,

Have you tried nasal irrigation before? I think mucous can contribute to bb even if colourless.
