Getting My Tonsils/Adenoids Removed Tuesday 2-2-2016

Post by FuckHalitosis »

I am hoping this will be one of my last Friday nights sitting at home dateless using food as a source of pleasure to replace affection from females. I have not been able to have a girlfriend for the last 10+ years. I am an attractive, fit man, but my breath was making it so that I could not get past the first date. Once they experienced my halitosis, they bolted immediately never to return. And that lingering thought that everybody was talking about me behind my back was always in my mind. I spent many years working on getting my dental care completely up to par, with no success in stopping the halitosis. One night a few years ago I had a date with a very attractive female who was really into me. It was summer so we ate outside and walked around outside and saw the sights. We had a great time. At the end of the night she was eager to come into my place. As soon as we began to get close it hit her. She suddenly said she had to leave, and I never heard from her again. The next morning I was distraught. I didn't know anything about tonsil crypts or anything like that but I coughed one up for the first time. I looked at it then smashed it between my fingers and smelled it. It was the most God awful thing I have ever smelled. It was worse than feces. I said to myself, if my breath smells like this then I understand why I'm undateable. I was so destitute I went on a Porn board that I frequent and put a post that I have bad breath and have tried everything to alleviate it. Most people on the board ridiculed me but one compassionate soul gave me a link to this forum. So I became aware of the adenoids and tonsils as a source. I went to an ENT about my adenoids. He said I didn't have an adenoid and told me to leave. He didn't care about my problem at all, or me. And It was very difficult for me to discuss because I was so embarrassed and timid. I even flew to another state to see an ENT who specialized in a procedure called coblation cryptolysis, which is where they use a device that uses high frequency radio waves to dissolve the crypts without removing tonsil. He said it was 80% effective and the crypts might grow back. He said the only 100% cure is full tonsillectomy which I could have done closer to home. So in my city I found an ENT practice that specialized in coblation full tonsillectomies. I went to see the ENT this week and scheduled my procedure for Tuesday (2-2-2016). He is going to do a Tonsillectomy/Adenoidectomy and a turbinate reduction. I am going to make sure he hits the bottom of the adenoids too after reading the post from 9YearsToFindCure's post. I am very optimistic about this procedure. I promise to not be one of those people who gets cured and then forgets about the people still suffering. I will provide updates even if this solves the problem. I have read a lot of posts and can strongly relate to the isolation and social debilitation that halitosis inflicts on a person's life. So I will share my results within a couple of weeks. I heard the recovery process is hell but I know its no where near as bad as the never ending hell of chronic bad breath. Thanks to all who share this information that will help us all improve our lives. You are my heroes.

Good Luck! I hope this turns out to be your cure. Please provide updates, good or bad. I will closely follow your progress. I had a tonsillectomy and recovery was not that bad. Just make sure to stay hydrated and drink lots of fluids. I'm sorry I didn't push harder for an adenoidectomy at the time. Stay positive. We have had several cures from adenoid removal from others here. If this cures you, I will renew my push for an adenoidectomy.

Will do. Keeping my fingers crossed and praying that this works.

I had my procedure done. My ENT confirmed after the surgey that he did get my adenoid, even though earlier I had been told by another ENT that I did not have one. I probably had a remnant. I had my adenoid and palentine tonsils removed. I also had a turbinate reduction. I had some bleeding from the nose the day after. I have a lot of throat pain when I swallow and do have the white cheesy scab formations in my throat. I was told by my ENT and read on this site that my breath will be bad until I heal. I think there has been an improvement in my breath already although I think it does still smell bad. I did have a person cover his nose at a restaurant yeaterday where I was ordering soup. And one of my friends did kind of back away from me at one point which kinda looks like he was trying to avoid my breath. Even though I can't smell my own breath directly, I used to be able to tell by when I get out of my car and go into a store then get back in, my car would smell kinda like ass. I was encouraged because I did not experience that today. I really do believe that this is going to cure me. My procedure was done using coblation, not lasers or knives.

I had a very difficult time sleeping the last couple of nights. My tongue was bruised during the procedure and also my uvula appears to be swollen. So when I laid on my back, my uvula would swing up into the back of my nasal cavity and prevent me from being able to exhale through my nose. And because of the turbinate reduction if I tried to sleep on my stomach, my nose would bleed. So the last 2 nights I have had to sleep sitting up right on the couch. And because I could only breath through my mouth, my throat and tongue would become very dry and my throat would be ultra painful. I just picked up my percoset prescription so hopefully the pain will be lessened. Also I am sucking on ice chips. I can say that the turbinate reduction has made breathing through my nose much easier. I had a lot of caked up bload in my nostrils. It felt like a million big, hard boogers in my nose. When I would try to pull them out the bleeding would start again. This morning while in the shower I let water go in my nose and it softened them to where I could remove them without aggravating the turbinate wounds.

Right before the surgery I did ask my ENT about my lingual tonsils and he said they don't contribute to halitosis. They only remove those in cases of sleep apnea.

My only thing is how am I going to test this. I have never discussed my bad breath with anyone. It has been something that I have been so ashamed of and it was even hard for me to talk to doctors about it. I have my post op appointment with my ENT in a couple of weeks so maybe I'll ask him how I'm smelling. I do need to find one other person to talk to before I start going on dates. Have any of you discussed your halitosis with people you know? If so how did you select the person?

I'll keep you guys posted.

Goodluck and all the best to you.

I too have seen an ENT last week and found nothing. I will be seeing a gastro specialist next month and will update this forum if there're any new findings to share with forumers over here.

Guys I appreciate your well wishes. Today is day 7 of my recovery and yesterday and today have been very painful. Probably the most painful. I was taking the percosets but I stopped because they didn't really help with the pain. They made me feel a little high and woozy, but the pain did not diminish. They gave me severe constipation and I had a very unpleasant experience with that. I know it will be down hill from here. I'm still on potato soup, apple sauce and recently added grits to the mix. These are the things I found go down the best. Eating a lot of ice chips and drinking as much water as I can even though swallowing is extremely painful.

Still keeping my fingers crossed that this is my cure. I really do believe I will be cured by this. I know my breath is a little bad because I can smell it, I can smell the odor of the healing wounds. Its not pleasant, but I don't think it's nearly as bad as before. I am a vegan and mostly eat a very clean diet. Have no digestive issues. Don't think I have TAMU. So I will keep you guys posted. I have my post op with my ENT on Feb 18th. Be glad when this healing process is done so I can get back to my life.

I'll keep you guys updated.

^^^good luck man

Yesterday I had my palatine tonsils removed fully by knife, unfortunately he did not agree to remove adenoid as he said they were very small.
I too am hoping this is the cure once and for all, I have a good feeling about this but time will tell. I am in lots of pain, the medicine helps but wears off every few hours after taking the tablets. I have not eaten since tuesday night and now its early thursday evening. I have only had water, lollypops and few spoons of yogurt. Swallowing is very difficult and there for some reason is a lots of phlegm stuck in throat which is not helping. Having said all this Im hoping for the best.

In August 2015 I had my palatine tonsils partially removed via laser surgery, the surgeon this time around was less than impressed with the work done by the previous ent surgeon and said my tonsils were badly scarred but he tried to do the best possible this time around.
I also went for a tmau test couple weeks ago, just so I can rule that off the list or not, results will come in a month or so.

peace

Wishing you the best. Most people advise against eating dairy during the recovery process because it causes mucus buildup so that may explain you phlegm.

I don't understand how these ENTs feel like they can tell patients that they will not remove their adenoids. They work for us. It's not like your saying remove your heart or something else that you need. They don't understand that we are suffering and trying to remove all possible causes. I told my ENT to remove my adenoids and when I woke up the 1st thing he said was I got the adenoid. My guy was really cool and he really listened to me. I told him about my halitosis and he told me that he empathized with me. He said he could imagine my level of self consciousness and I can tell he really wanted to help me.

I sincerely hope this works for you. I know my adenoids contributed to my problem because even though I could not smell my own breath, I could taste something unpleasant in my PND. And for you it would have been better if the ENT would have taken the adenoid while he was already in there, because if you have a small adenoid its going to be hard to convince another ENT to go in there just for that. I wish these ENTs would get better updated on how the tonsils and adenoids relate to halitosis and do better about eliminating as many sources as possible because people are really suffering.

Anyway, I wish you the best and I hope the healing process is not too brutal. This is day 9 for me and I can tell that I just past through the worst of it. I'm still in pain but it's starting to taper off. I still have my white cheesy scabs but I think maybe they'l go away in another week. Stay strong and avoid dairy.

I'll give a brief update today. Finally I have passed over the apex of the pain and can feel my body heading to the finish line on the healing process. I am still in pain. But it is day 10 and the pain is finally starting to leave. The only interesting thing that happened today is I had several strong urges to sneeze. I tried to hold it in because just going into the sneeze hurt my tonsils badly. But my body eventually won the battle and I sneezed and something unexpected flew out of my nose. It was a big disgusting and smelly glob of phlegm and old blood and gunk. I think it was the final clearing of the adenoid space. It was totally gross, but after it was gone I could breath more clearly than I ever have before in life. I did have a turbinate reduction, but still this was weird. After that I did an Alkalol nasal rinse and I could actually feel the solution going all the way back into the area where the adenoid used to be. It was wonderfully refreshing. I will say that I do believe I am cured. I was out and about today in several restaurants hunting down potato soup and talking to people and got zero reactions. And my car did not stink when I got back into it. I really do think the adenoids played a big role. I'm not 100% sure yet but I do think I'm cured.

Awesome! Sounds very encouraging. I think the adenoids are often overlooked because doctors brainwash us into thinking that there is nothing there. I too think this is my problem. I watch for your updates daily.

Are you on antibiotics? If so, you might want to wait two weeks from completion until you make a final assessment.

Good luck!

Actually my ENT did not prescribe me any antibiotics. He only prescribed the percosets which I stopped taking after two days because they did not ease the pain and they gave me severe constipation. Like I said, I think I'm cured. But I have to perform some tests. My odor would intensify when I ate certain foods. So I have not been on a regular diet so far (still eating soft foods) so I have to see what happens when I go back to that. I am mostly vegan but do cheat and eat chicken and a pizza here and there. Those foods used to really stink me up bad. So once I'm done healing I have to eat those foods and see how my body reacts. So I can not say for certain yet that I am cured. But I have a good feeling that I am and I do think getting rid of the adenoids was very important. I will keep updating and will not stop until I have a 100% definitive answer.

FuckHalitosis, how did you manage to convince your doc to do the surgery, what arguments did you use?

Thanks btw.
