Post nasal drip sufferers...

Post by Sadface »

After using all sorts of mouthwashes and getting dental work done and still having a bad taste and strong odor after eating anything and a thick white coating and comments made that something smells (anywhere from fecal to cat litter to burned tires) I have to come to the conclusion that it is my nasal drip causing my problem.
I’ve been doing daily nasal rinses and they thin out the secretions enough to make the tongue coating not come back as fast. But still not good enough. I also noticed that when I do a nasal rinse I get small yellow/green globs coming out occasionally, so I wonder if I have a low grade chronic sinus infection?

So I went looking online again and found a post on Quora where someone posted that they had found a cure using some natural nasal spray with all sorts of oils in it. They said it tasted horrible (like wood) and burned badly but after 3 or 4 days they were able to have a fresh feeling mouth even after eating meat and cream which for me is impossible and would be a dream come true to be able to eat at a social function and not feel like I stink. They said after they finished the bottle they didn’t have a problem anymore and believed it was anti inflammatory oils combined with anti bacterial oils that wiped out bacteria from their inflamed sinuses. It’s called Sinusoothe and I ordered some and it will be here within the next couple of weeks. I will update if any miracles occur. In the meantime I’m still doing nasal flushes. Also got a water pick which I put mouthwash in just for peace of mind even though I don’t think that attacks the root of my problem it still doesn’t hurt it.

If anyone else with post nasal drip wants to try the Sinusoothe or has already let me know your results as well. It seems too simple to be a full cure but if it helps at all I’ll be grateful!

Also, if you’re curious to try it it’s about $30 and it’s available on Amazon but the shipping takes awhile to the U.S. and be sure you’re getting Sinusoothe and not Sinus Soothe. Or you can wait and see how it works for me and save yourself the money lol

I tried sinusoothe one or two years ago. I think i read about it on the same quora post. It didn't work for me unfortunately. But you know, that doesn't mean it can't work for you.
One point about the green/yellow globs, if you do daily flushes then one possibility could be that the flushing itself makes the mucous membrane irritated which makes them produce that. I had something similar which went away after i stopped blowing my nose aggressively multiple times a day.
But if you think it's an infection then maybe an ENT could be of help. Have you had your sinuses scanned?

Oh really? Thank you for the info, I do feel I do the nasal flushes a little excessively because the feeling of the mucus in my throat drives me crazy so it could very well be the reason for the small amount of yellow mucus. I visited an allergist just recently and he said if nothing else he will refer me to an ENT if he can’t help me figure it out so that’s in the future I’m sure.
I’m sorry it didn’t help you, that’s a bummer. I’ll still give it a go cause why not, worked for the person on the Quora post so there’s a slim chance it’ll help someone else too. Do you think your cause is solely post nasal drip?

I am not really sure if I have post nasal drip but I think I have one. I often have this feeling that there is a phlegm in my throat. Sometimes it's like between my nasal and throat. After always brushing my teeth then tongue, there's always this thick saliva(or mucus? it's like a clear phlegm) coming out of my throat. I'd spit it out but I feel like there's more behind. I also have white tongue coating. It gets worse when I eat dairy products and gluten food. I also have bb from nose and mouth. What do you think?

It sounds like exactly what I’m dealing with. When I brush my teeth and tongue I always have to spit out a lot of mucus. The tongue coating can be any kind of debris, but I’ve come to the conclusion that if it reappears within only a couple hours after brushing it off it has to be from my post nasal drip accumulating again. I’m not sure if that’s the case but others have said the same. I thought I had a dairy and gluten sensitivity cause I noticed it was worse for me when I ate those things too but after testing I don’t. However dairy causes your mucus to thicken anyways, even without an allergy. So I try to avoid it when I can because I notice it gets so much thicker and feels like I’m choking. I have nasal odor too. I think that can come from an odor in my throat from the post nasal drip. Once I started really sticking to nasal flushes I felt cleaner and that throat/nasal mucus feeling you said to have too clears up for awhile. Tongue brushing helps regular food odors and morning breath go away like it would for any normal person, but once I started focusing on gargling mouthwash deep in my throat by tilting my head all the way back for a long time I feel like it cleans out some mucus and freshens my throat where a lot of the post nasal drip accumulates and can’t be brushed away. It sounds like you have what I have, and these things have all relieved me a bit but I have to do them too frequently so they aren’t attacking the root of the problem. For all I know it can be allergies, chronic low grade infection/bacterial overgrowth, or just some weird reaction that causes my sinuses to inflame and produce mucus when they don’t need to. If you haven’t tried some nasal rinses give it a shot. I’ll post here again once I try the Sinusoothe and let you know if it helped me since we seem to be in the same boat. :)

Thank you for that. I appreciate it. Sounds like I have it but I think this is not the real deal, it seems like it's just a reaction from what's going on down(stomach/intestines/etc). I have tried gargling with water mix with salt, it's like the saltwater is thinning out the mucus from my throat and helps me to spit it out. But there's still left behind. And I am scraping my tongue with diluted hydrogen peroxide which helps me clean my tongue but not totally. I often also have mucus in my nose.

I have tried only nasal spray and it did not work. Nasal rinses here in my country are rare. I saw some products online but it's expensive for me. I'm still a student and we are not rich.

Have you ever tried going to specialist? I want to try the endoscopy :(

I do two daily nasal flushes. One in the morning, and another before bed. If you dont want to spend too much money, one simple way of doing it is buying a neti pot at AliExpress.com. Then you make your own saline solution with destiled water and 9 grams of sea salt per litre. This is the best way, and the cheapest to get rid of the mucus and feel cleaner. I also use a nasal spray Nasomet (Mometasone) because of the allergies.
In the morning I clean my tongue with 1/4 Hydrogen Peroxide solution and a tongue scraper. Then I brush my teeth and do a 2 minutes gargle with UltraDex mouth wash. This routine for me works amazing. It´s almost 24h of freshness.
Dont forget to avoid Dairy, Sugar, Wheat (Pastry, bread and everything containing white flour), Red meat (specially pork), Oily foods and Industrially processed foods.
My advice is, go natural. Drink plenty of water and eat lots of vegetables, fruit. Eat more chicken, turkey and fish. You will notice a huge difference in a matter of days.

Ive only seen an allergist. Plain saline nasal spray didn’t do anything for me either. I’m young and don’t have much money myself and have spent upsetting amounts of money on solving this issue so I completely understand.

It’s totally possible your nasal drip is caused by something systemic like you said. I’ve read that Candida can cause nasal drip, and so can GERD. However I know you don’t want to go around buying treatments for all of the things it could be, that gets expensive (I know from personal experience lol) so I would really try getting a specialists opinion. When you simply swallow, no food or drinks, just saliva, do you have a faint bad taste? That’s how I figured out my issue and started to lean towards sinus treatments. I had a very vague foul taste when I swallowed when my mouth was dry (in social situations I would get very anxious.) I know figuring it out is frustrating. I feel your pain.

I wanted to post an update and say I got the Sinusoothe yesterday and after dabbing a little on my skin to make sure I wouldn’t react to any of the oils I went ahead and did as the bottle said-3 puffs in each nostril and sniffing it up into my sinuses. The smell is NOT bad. It’s very much the same smell like any other product that uses any essential oil. The burn is also nothing compared to what I’ve experienced with say a saline rinse that I put too much salt in. The taste when it reaches your throat is also nothing to cry about.

I’ve only been using it one whole day and partly this day and I don’t want to jump the gun for my sake and everyone reading and I’m skeptical of everything I try seeming to work right away because I’ve been disappointed so many times. But I truly feel like this product is helping me somehow. Yesterday I ate a lettuce and chicken wrap with garlic ranch (usually would make my breath terrible) and then I had an iced vanilla latte which I haven’t let myself enjoy in months because the sugar and coffee would surely make my breath stink. Yet after this, and not brushing my tongue except for once in the morning and again in the evening, I didn’t have the trash can taste I usually have in my mouth and throat. In fact I would take a swig of water and feel completely fresh and confident. I also didn’t have mucous running down my throat all day. It wasn’t completely gone but heavily improved. Tongue coating however did seem to return as quickly.

I even went out for drinks with my boyfriend and felt confident and was speaking closely to our favorite bartender who always says it like it is and she didn’t say anything smelled or leaned back, she was near me almost the whole night. She even hugged me goodbye. These things seem silly to be excited for but after feeling like a social burden or some dirty person who offends people with smelling bad, I feel so happy about it. And that’s with drinking beer which again usually makes my breath bad and the mouth drying out with alcohol doesn’t help the case.

Like I said guys, I don’t want to get too excited because I don’t want to be disappointed and I don’t want anyone else to be either. We all see that enough. But when I woke up this morning I didn’t have the heavy amount of mucus collected in my throat and my breath hardly smelled beyond a little normal morning breath which after drinking and stuff could have been way worse and I was so tired I didn’t even brush or do a nasal rinse before I went to sleep.

I’m going to keep using the Sinusoothe until the bottle is gone. I will keep updating everyone as well. Hopefully it keeps improving but if not I will let you guys know.

Right! I notice a huge improvement when my diet is full of things like this. I think any type of bad breath can be reduced by eating these things. Thank you for sharing your routine, 24 hours of freshness is a blessing to a lot of us!

How old are you, Sadface? No, I don't have that bad taste when I swallow. This might sound strange but the phlegm in my throat which I felt is always there is gone now. It really is not the root of all this. I'm glad, it seems working for you.

And please, can you tell me if when you are eating, does your surrounding smells?

I’m 23, and no actually when I’m eating I feel like most of the time I don’t have any issues as weird as that seems. About 30 mins after eating is when my breath feels the worst.
