Military & BB

Post by trenski »

I am considering enlisting in the military, preferably the Reserves. This is something I always wanted to do but BB held me back. Now that the military has raised the enlistment age, this may be my last chance to enlist. Has anyone experienced military life with having BB? Should I enlist? Will the reactions and comments be any worst than civilian life? Please leave your advice on what you think I should do.

Welcome Trenski,

Well I do not have first hand experience as I've never enlisted; but my brother has told me some doozies. I'm not sure where you are located but my brother was in boot camp here in the states, and if you can survive boot camp you can survive anything. DIs and COs are relentless and will find anything to humiliate you, so if they notice your bb which they will if you have it, then they will be sure to point it out to you and everyone else in probably an extremely demeaning manner. But who knows, maybe the military has a cure and they're not letting the rest of us in on it.

I'm going to second that. I've grown up in a military family and it is ROUGH. They will definitely find anything they can to pick at you. My cousin is actually in Afghanistan right now and he said that one of the guys has cat shit breath, and he doesn't want to talk to him because of it...and he'll point it out whenever the dude talks to him. Of course, my cousin is an asshole, but these guys will say what's on their mind. They ALL do it. And yes, they do make nicknames for recruits, and those nicknames stick with you...most of them are jabs at the people and some of them are funny, but a breath problem is not funny (although it may seem so to them). So just be careful and if you do decide to enlist, grow a thick skin because that's the first thing they'll throw at you, and it'll keep coming at you as long as you're in there.

Oh and just to add....expect people to get right up in your face and yell at you, and you have to respond back to them while they're all up in your face. It will be quite uncomfortable. I'd hate to have to think about you going through that, I know I'd be completely humiliated.

go for it

hey just go for it,

I think you may have more to worry about than your BB if you enrol....
and if anything it's gonna improved your self confidence having something positive to focus on...

Go for it if it's what you want.

Thanks for all the comments & advice. They all are helpful. I agree with all of you. I also think it will help my confidence, I 'm going to do it. It takes a while to enlist, with all the paper work and tests etc. Maybe I can find a way to alleviate my BB before enlisting. Thanks Again.

Not so good idea. But we all must make a living.
My sons father is in the military and he once was a drill srg. He told me its his job to be mean, and break them, and basicaly brainwash them.
Actually we should be boycotting the military. There alot of secret and bad stuff going on right now in our government. You may love your country, but they do not love us.
You can find out alot of this info on infowars.com.
Lets not forget people 911 WAS AN INSIDE JOB.
our own government did this to us, to put us in a panic, so they could throw in their so called savior, to swith us to socialism, and then communism. Dont Join. The news is not real. Fox news is the best. Stay on the internet and research things. They are in control of the stock market crash, rising iol, and food,
And people please know the federal resrve is a private a private bank, that the united staes does not own.
The Iraq war was all about money. What they do is send economic hitmen into these countries, to debt them, once they are in debt we get ther resources, if you watch the news, youll see this is what they are doing to Chavez in Venezuala right now. When they took down Huessein it was because he wouldnt let them bankrupt him. He did not give in and you see what happende.
A plane did not hit the pentagon, Yes it was hit but only ibn one specific area where they held corruptive documents like the enron scandal.
DONT JOIN, AND DONT LET ANYONE YOU KNOW JOIN MATTER AFFACT DONT BRING ANY CHILDREN IN THIS WORLD UNLESS YOUR RICH, BECAUSE THERE WILL BE NO JOBS WHEN THEY OPEN THE BORDERS
Those of you who didnt want to hear that our government is not on our side, so what.
I am part black, nut the fact that we have Obama changes nothing. New face same game

yes, our country is screwed up.....but for those who don't like it here what I say is "hit the road jack and don't you come back no more no more"! At least we don't have to worry about getting our heads chopped off if we say something against someone. I kinda like my head although I would trade in my stinky mouth!!

I know what I need, if I am to have any chance of managing this bb, is a healing environment. I think everyone needs some support and nurturing, and the fact that I (and I would guess many of us) find it so difficult to heal is that this love and support is missing and I am experiencing isolation and rejection. So I would consider the army to be a very unhealthy, stressful environment, and not conducive to healing in any sense. But I suppose if you feel it really is your mission in life, then you've got to follow it regardless. Best of luck with your decision.

Don't let bb stop you. You can't help it you have bb. I was in the air force for 4 years when I was younger. I remember in basic training people were complaining about not getting to brush their teeth and stinky breath and they just told us to eat fruit.....lol

One time at my permanent base someone did make a comment and I set him straight and nothing else was said. Yes, he felt pretty small when I was done with him. I gave him the sometimes people have issues they can't help speech haha

Hi Trenski,

I stop by the forum periodically and felt that I should give a response. I served on active duty with the Army for 3 years and have worked as a civilian for the Army for over 15 years now. The reactions you will get are no different from any other place you'd go. Someone will always point out your bad breath. As far as basic training, the object is to create a warlike environment in case you have to go to war. It is preparation and some of it is mental....not meant to break you, but, to strengthen you mentally and physically for future use. It teaches you to work as a team member to accomplish a mission, some of it we already do in this forum coming up with solutions. Some people aren't used to structure and rebelled or gave up instead of trying to do some of the training....those were the ones that were targeted by the drill sergeants after awhile. If you are at least trying your best, they will see it and stay out of your face most of the time  . It was one of the most rewarding things I've done and showed me just what I was made of. You won't see it until you've made it through to the end. I think some of the thick skin I developed helped me to deal with bad breath a little better. Also you may find that the military work outs may help alleviate some of your bad breath if you haven't been exercising already. Also, when we stayed out in the woods for a few days for training, we were all stinky after the first day. Good Luck!
