My Case

Post by whatevz »

Alright, so definitely new to these boards... I have had BB since I was in the 8th grade, currently in university now. It was terrible when it started, and then throughout high school and beginnings of uni I stopped caring and just went on with my life, and it seemed to work.. although I knew I had BB, I decided to ignore it. However, most recently it has gotten worse... I recently noticed I had tonsil stones (my first time ever) and I went to the doctor immediately, she prescribed me anti-biotics thinking it was strep throat. After looking on these boards, I have been absolutely paranoid about my breath. I have gone from thinking I have sinus issues to candida to acid reflux to a infected crown. I just started taking Chlorella and Spirulina and Probiotics, and I have cut out dairy and eggs from my diet. I did notice that my BB was definitely worse from dairy and eggs.

Recently, I have been more aware of reactions around me, and I do see people rubbing their noses and covering their noses often, even had a couple people offer me gum.

As a child I did have a sinus x-ray and I do not have sinusitis. However, I do always have a persistent runny nose, I bought a netti-pot and have been taking advil cold and sinus and that seems to be working to keep it at bay. As well, I am constantly burping, especially recently so I'm thinking I may have some type of acid reflux, thoughts on how to diminish that? Lastly, my BB started to begin when I had a severely decayed tooth as a child. The dentist fixed the tooth and placed a crown over it, it did not relieve me of the BB... so I'm assuming there is a high possibility it may be rooted from that? I am going to the dentist Friday, I know a lot of people have forced their dentist to remove the crown to discover it was the cause, despite the dentist assuring it is healthy and normal. Besides that tooth issue, I have very healthy gums and teeth.

In regards to my mouth, I do have dry mouth quite often. It isn't EXTREMELY dry, however it definitely it not always naturally moist. My tongue is not extremely coated, it is slightly white, but not anything in comparison to other BB sufferers. I do follow a strict oral hygiene routine, I use antibacterial toothpaste and therabreath mouth wash... and I tongue scrape and floss constantly. When I do the "lick test" and the "spoon test", I do smell a sour stench on my arm/spoon, but it doesn't linger for very long... 10 seconds at most, and it isn't extremely strong.

I have hassled my parents and sister constantly asking about my breath, and they assure me they do not smell it... HOWEVER, I do get reactions from other people, been offered gum multiple times, have people sitting BEHIND me cover their noses when I talk to someone beside me. I am not imagining these reactions, so I am also wondering that perhaps family members have an immunity to it? It's absolutely ridiculous, I just want this to go away!

TO ADD ON: My father did have BB before, however it is cured, SOMEHOW? My mother just told me he gargled and it was fine, but I remember as a child it being really bad and fecal smelling.... I know when mine first started it was DEFINITELY fecal smelling, however I'm not sure how it smells now, does the spoon test really work? Does my breath smell sour? When I asked my mom about it today, and told her about the reactions I'm getting she dismisses it and doesn't want to hear it... it's ridiculous how it can't be discussed in my family...

TO add on... anyone from Canada? I honestly think it would benefit everyone if people in the area met up and somehow fought at this together... perhaps give honest opinions on our breath, and use each other as some type of progress report?

Sorry, I KEEP adding on to this.. BUT I did notice during the summer it definitely was not as bad, I barely got reactions, I barely thought about it.. I still had the dry and sour taste, but looking back, not a lot of reactions at all... even though I drank alcohol nearly everyday and ate like shit. Btw, in the summer I also lived in another apartment on my own with some roomies. ALSO, to add on.. I don't think it could be my house, we recently moved into this house, and the BB began at a previous home.

ALSO... ahahha, wow sorry this is getting ridiculous, I have given you an actual life story here... but, I recall before moving in that my top two wisdom teeth were extracted. I only have one wisdom tooth left, and it is partially emerging.. when I touch it and smell my finger/cotton swab, it has a putrid smell to it, but when I touch it a second time the smell seems to disappear? I'm hoping to GOD that the source is my teeth as opposed to my sinuses/candida/digestive system---it would make life SO much goddamn easier.

Are you due to have that last wisdom tooth extracted?

I am not. I was supposed to have all my wisdom teeth extracted 2 years ago, but I delayed it because I wanted to go camping and drink, haha ridiculous I know.. but I'm assuming my BB was definitely not as traumatic then considering my reactions weren't as bad (or I didn't pay attention to them as I do now?)

I'm going to my dentist Friday though, and demand it be removed. I don't think it can be removed immediately considering it's partially covered by some gum.

But I also don't think it's solely attributed to my wisdom teeth, as it began in the 8th grade when I had no sign of my wisdom teeth growing in.

I have been semi-haunting these boards before I joined and understand that your BB came from your crown? Or was that someone else? When it did, did you have tonsil stones, runny nose, acid reflux, etc etc? And what was the taste/feeling in your mouth?

I got my father to admit that he noticed it smells like tooth decay or rotting/dead animal? BUT, he said it's very mild and only noticeable when I breathe into his face. I feel like he's trying to be nice about not noticing anything when I speak. I find this very odd because my mother swears she doesn't smell anything and thinks I'm going legitimately crazy because she can't sense anything. I'm assuming this smell can be attributed to tooth decay? and is therefore attributed to my covered crown?! hopefully! ALSO.. I do notice a small hole beside my crown, but this could just be a hole from my wisdom tooth? I only got that specific tooth removed 3 months ago, so a hole could still exist?

Hi, not sure where you are referring to with this hole.
One thing you have to remember is that people will react (by react I mean they'll prevent themselves from having to smell it) to your breath when you speak close to them, even if it only smells mildly. And as long as we think we have any degree of bad breath we'll assume its as bad as bad breath can get (because we have no certain way of knowing otherwise).

I'm also not sure when you refer to your crown whether you refer to the crown of a certain tooth, or whether you are referring to an artificial tooth crown. Artificial ones are glued into place and WILL fail after a certain time and when that happens it can cause the most horrendous dead-animal breath.

My BB was caused by an impacted wisdom tooth, no decay or rot, just the deformed way it grew in my jaw.

I had tonsils stones (while I still had tonsils) and i still have nasal allergies and occasional acid reflux. The taste in my mouth a couple of hours or so after eating or brushing teeth etc was like i'd just rinsed my mouth out with sewage.

Ignore your mum, she just doesnt want you to become obsessed about your breath. She wants you to believe her and hopes that one day your breath might go back to normal by itself, as it does for so many people when they dentist finds something wrong and fixes it and inadvertantly cures the BB.

I once had an extremely decayed tooth and they performed a root canal on it, and placed a crown over top of it. I am quite positive this has to be the case, as growing up I remember the Crown had quite a large hole that I would constantly pick at, but that hole was later fixed. I feel as though throughout time, however, food debris etc would have got caught in that hole and STAYED there, so should I suggest scaling? I'm going to the dentist in an hour and a half, haha, so I will update as soon as I come home!

In reference to the sewage taste... mine is nowhere near that bad. I definitely have an odd sour taste, but the taste USED to be sewage-like when it first began. It largely diminished as I grew up. The coating on my tongue isn't so thick, a very thing layer of white, but relatively pink... my sister's is whiter. But I honestly do not believe tongue-coatings are the way to go... I was on facebook the other day, and a guy who does not have chronic halitosis had a picture of him sticking out his tongue -- the whitest tongue I had ever seen! Anyway, regarding this sewage taste, I'm wondering, do all teeth-related incidences result in a sewage taste? I feel like there has to be a correlation between the type of smell you emit, the degree of it, and the taste you have in your mouth with the exact problem you may have. I.e, dead animal smell = origin: mouth = some type of tooth decay, fermenting milk smell = origin: stomach = lactose intolerance, fecal = origin: digestive system?

ALSO... I plan on not brushing my teeth as well as I normally do, haha, to PROVE that I do have bad breath.

*****UPDATE****
Alright so, I JUST came back from the dentist. They did not believe me when I told them it HAD to be from my mouth, I was adamant they x-ray my mouth and take a look at the stubborn back tooth. LOW and behold, despite insisting it cannot be that tooth that causes my breath, the x-ray revealed an infection that stems from that tooth (the very back tooth, right beside the now non-existent wisdom tooth, and right beside the left tonsil which is where i got my first tonsil stones) all the way to my damn sinuses. This has been happening since I was 13 years old. My dentist looked at me dumbfounded, and said, "...since you were 13 eh". Needless to say, I'm pissed that this has been going on since I was 13 and have been living with it, now that I'm 19. Furthermore, she isn't sure what to do, she suggested I see a specialist and have a root canal. HOWEVER, this issue has plagued me for far too long, so I asked about having the tooth extracted. She agreed, but because it hits my sinuses, she doesn't want to touch it, and will let me know Tuesday whether I need oral surgery etc.

Now, to explain this hole beside my back tooth. She told me that I have a chip in that tooth which caused the hole, and insisted not enough debris could be caught in there to cause bad breath (prior to the x-ray) Well, after realizing the tooth was severely infected, I looked online and discovered that a hole will form beside a tooth as a way of "drainage" to prevent the tooth from feeling any discomfort, and IS a sign of the tooth being dead and an infection. I honestly cannot wait for Tuesday to come and get this shit over with. It was far too coincidental that my breath began to smell when I had this decayed tooth AND when the root canal did not seem to fix it.

This would explain a couple things: 1) why my left side is slightly swollen 2) why my left tonsil was swollen 3) why I never felt any severe pain from that tooth 4) why I have a CONSTANT runny nose, no matter what time of year is (and this was not attributed to any other issue as I have had sinus x-rays etc) 5)...and consequently, why I had bad breath.

Ok so this has led me to a couple questions:
1) Once this tooth is removed, will the bad breath go away completely? I looked online regarding infected root canals etc, and after giving a wonderful explanation, it ended saying "only a dentist can help you decide how to get rid of the bad breath"... (this was the site http://health.ezinemark.com/infected-ro ... c5a19.html)
2) Has anyone had a similar issue?
3) I told my mother about it, and she SERIOUSLY does not smell anything. She is dumbfounded as to how this is possible, she genuinely does not smell anything and wants me to speak to my cousin who is an Internist, and completely rule out other issues. She doesn't have a poor sense of smell because she has complained about co-worker's breath etc. So this leads me to believe that the "immunity" theory is true? That someone who you have lived with does not smell it? Which makes no sense, as my dad did smell it, however only slightly... I don't think this suggests that the smell isn't terrible, as I have had bad reactions to it, so there HAS to be a pretty strong smell... I am adamant in believing this lol, won't believe otherwise
4) In the meantime how do I keep the smell at bay? Will coconut oil work, now that I know it is stemming from my mouth? I asked my doc, and suggested salt water... No offence whatsoever, but from experience, and I know others will agree, that probably won't work considering I've tried everything in the world
5) COULD an infection from the root canal cause bad breath since I was 13?! Am I being too optimistic in believing that this is the root (no pun intended lol) cause?
6) Sorry about this ridiculously long post

All in all, I am both relieved and angry at the same time. This could have been dealt with A LONG time ago. I am glad I am figuring this out now before I begin my career. As well, I am so glad I can eat dairy and cheese again haha...

Get back to be guys!
Thanks:)

Good luck whateverz,
I too had a tooth situation on my right side which was releasing a discharge and while I still had my tonsils it was always the right side that smelled FAR worse, and always seemed to have bigger and a higher quantity of stones.

You may find that the BB is due to what this tooth is doing inside your sinuses. Only time will tell.

Its never too much information, the more you say the clearer the picture.

Whateverz, have a read of this story I found a few years ago about someone's experience with a failed tooth crown:-

-------------------------------------------------
I have been struggling with bad breath for over 15 years. I have tried gum mints, Therabreath, Biotene. I had my tonsils taken out. I've gone to ENT's, Gastro Docs, General Practioners, Chiropracters, Reflexologists, and plenty of Dentists.

The dentists tell me it's acid reflex, the gastro docs sent me back to the dentists. Everyone blamed it on Post nasal drip. I've bought nasal irrigation systems; I should own stock in Trident; I've traveled to Chicago and was considering going to California. In short, I have spent THOUSANDS of dollars and countless hours trying to figure this out.

Finally, after someone offered me another piece of gum (don't you love when people do that) on Sunday, I was back to square one with worry, anxiety humiliation, and embarassment.

On Monday, I looked up crowns and halitosis. I got a crown placed on my tooth back in 1992. Guess what? There were stories of people with cracked crowns, cracked teeth under crowns, and BAD BREATH.

Tuesday - yesterday - I saw a NEW dentist. I told him I want the crown and tooth removed. I was sent downstairs to an oral surgeon.

He took it out and sent me home. I called back and asked the condition of the tooth. It was decayed and cracked. My breath had been described as "it's like something crawled up there and died," Well, my tooth was dead.

Years of embarassment, thousands of dollars, multiple visits to ENT's, Gastro doctor, Dentists, etc. Told to drink water, scrape tongue, floss, take acid reflux drugs, etc.

And NO ONE thought to ask, "How long has that crown been on?" I asked a dentist earlier this year about the crown being the source of my bad breath. She tapped it and said no, it was on there securely.

I am going to write to every single one of these doctors so they can possibly help someone else. This may not be your problem or a common problem but it was MY problem. I can't believe NO ONE thought of this before.

I am convinced that you are the most important person as regards to your life. I hope no one else has to go through what I have gone through.

Please, keep searching. Your answer is out there. I wish you the best of luck and hope that these message boards will do for us what no doctor has the time to do.

that sounds very promising! I found out that the tooth wasn't crowned, or it was removed? but it has a filling, but the filling chipped.. however, I read in a post by Haligone that a woman extracted a chipped filling and found it led to her sinuses and it removed her BB! let's hope this is my cure!

Wow this is really groundbreaking info about causes of bb.
I just can't believe this day in age, with all our advanced technology..it takes us regular non doctor people to have to figure this sh_t out. But anyways I'm glad you did. Now it has me thinking about my mouth..as I suffer tonsil stones..and my left tonsil has deep crypts while my right does not. Also when I had my wisdom teeth extracted at 17..I was told one actually broke off and so I have a broken tooth sitting in there..now aint that lovely. But its under the gum..I dont feel it poking out, no weird odors in the area or holes. But I sure would like to find out on what side of my mouth the broken wisdom tooth is..as that would be Very interesting if it happens to be on my left side with the cryptic tonsil.

I never knew some of the teeth hit the sinuses. Wow, this info is so helpful. Could you explain just which teeth do hit the sinuses? Wisdom and back molars? Top teeth and bottom?

And it sucks that dentists apparently are very dumbfounded about this..and heaven forbid someone actually wants an x-ray to see if theres anything going on there.

.I was hoping if you could tell me which tooth you had extracted? I'm not sure if it was your wisdom tooth or the very back molar? Was it on your upper or lower teeth?

Thanks whatevz
