Another endoscopy

Post by compor »

Here is a brief history:

- became aware of my bb 6+ years ago.
- Thought it was something temporary, tried basic procedures, brushing flossing etc.
- Still thinking it was mouth related, removed wisdom teeth, started using braces, periodontists said it was fine
- Tried ENT, have deviated septum and concha bullosa (on hold)
- Tried Gastroenterology, had H. pylori, treated and cured. Then I had 2 endoscopies, chronic atrophic gastritis and intestinal metaplasia.
- Examined by Dr. Murat Aydin, tests shown Type 2 + 3.

Last week I had another endoscopy (3rd), got results today: chronic atrophic gastritis and intestinal metaplasia. Doctor prescribed ppi and sent me home.

It's quite obvious that I have gastrointestinal issues but doctors cannot do anything about it. So I guess I should stop with it for a while and start focusing on my deviated septum.

I'm interested in this particulary, you visited him? I would like to know a little bit more if that's ok.
What in particular he diagnosed you with?
And how come you still have bb if you got your diagnose (don't mean to be rude, I would just like to know did u get any medicine, or instruction what to do etc.)

Yes, I was lucky. He visited my city for a short while.

He examined my nasal ct scan closely. He has some procedures to determine where the smell is coming from. I think it's best you ask him about the details of these tests, they may be confidential. As a result of these tests he diagnosed me with Type 2 and Type 3.

For Type 2, I need septoplasty. Dr. Murat Aydin explained it clearly that it has to be done by a skilled surgeon who will take care of concha bullosa. Still searching.
For Type 3, I had 3 endoscopies, still using ppi and gaviscon. Also Dr. Murat Aydin prescribed magnesium hydroxide and digestive enzymes for temporary relief.

I kinda lost hope on Type 3. Gonna have septoplasty as soon as possible.

That's wonderful to hear, you were lucky indeed, how did u find out he's coming to your town if it's ok from me to ask?

Abt concha bullosa, did anybody before (ENT) looked you ct scan and bring that out too?
Is there any way to know which one of those 2 poblems is contributing to bb more? Maybe really it is nasal problem more, since your treatment for type 3 does not solve it.
One more thing, do you have nasal odor too? And what type of smell do you suffer from mostly, how strong is it?
Thank you for this informations btw!

Compor was Dr. Aydinmur able to detect different levels of odour between your nasal air and mouth air?

Do you have any Type-1 BB from these other causes you've been diagnosed with?

I wish you good luck with your treatment. Please keep reporting back.

Re: Sickandtired
I contacted him via phone about a year ago. He was kind enough to inform me that will be examining patients in my town for a few days. I took the opportunity.

Nope, 2 ENT specialists checked my ct scan, both said almost the same thing: You have deviated septum but it does not require surgery. None of them said a word about concha bullosa or that it might cause bb.

In my report H2S values for mouth smell and nasal smell are almost the same (1.3 and 1.2 [max accepted value is 0.7]), so either they both contribute equally, or it's mainly nasal and pnd is the reason for high Type 3 (just a guess).

Yes I do have nasal odor. I can smell myself only when it's really strong. A close friend said when my bb is bad it's fecal and very hard to tolerate.

Re: halitosisux
Yes, H2S and H2 levels were different.
Might have Type 1 too, will deal with that when I get rid of the braces.

I have been searching for some skilled doctors for septoplasty and concha bullosa operations. Have been reading patient reviews in forums. Long story short, I reduced the list to 3 candidates. Then I read a post about a woman in late 30s, who has suffered from halitosis for long years. She has deviated septum too. She goes to the doctor, tells him that septoplasty is her only hope left. Doctor examines her (ENT specialist), removes food particles from her tonsils and tells her that she needs tonsillectomy. She has the operation, and is cured now.

Who knows?

Good luck with finding a skilled doctor compor, visiting university hospitals would help you imo, since those are the places where most scientific minded doctors work at around here.

You can have mr Murat file a report (of your medical condition) for you to give your ENT spec btw, thats what i did just the other week.

I have never heard that nasal surgery would cure bb. Most unlikely. Even if you have concha bulosa.
This is me, Jimi Stein, I created this site in December 2005. Welcome.

@Jimi how's that possible when i found one very old subject here, the girl was cured after nasal surgery. She got turbinate reduction and deviated septum fixed.

Since my last endoscopy I have been pretty careful with what I eat and when I eat, plus I use my medication regularly. As a result my stomach related problems are reduced significantly.

I have 3 possible causes, in order of precedence:

1. Deviated septum + concha bullosa >> I really have high hopes in this surgery, cause Dr. Murat's examination showed I have nasal smell. And also metronidazole is extremely effective against my bb (anaerobic bacteria in concha bullosa)
2. Tonsillectomy >>> After septoplasty this would be my goal, at least to have my tonsils examined by a doctor with lots of experience in this area. So far I have seen 3 ENT specialist, but all were young and their examination lasted approximately 10 seconds.
3. If all above fails, my last hope remains within the gastrointestinal region but the problem is I have no idea what else I can do about it. They will probably ask for another endoscopy and prescribe ppi.

By the way, I found myself a decent doctor for septoplasty. He is not a plastic surgeon though, but an ENT specialist. Some say it's better to have it done by a plastic surgeon, some say by an ENT specialist. I will have the surgery on September.
