Why do some people with post nasal drip not smell?

I've been lurking on here for awhile and it appears like mucus plays a big role in causing bad breath and potentially nasal odor. There's always been a dilemma for me: why do the majority people who have mucus (from LPR or Post nasal drip) never smell? It seems like their mucus doesn't even feed the bacteria on their tongue. Why do we smell? Is it just an unfavorable bacterial ecosystem? Would fecal transplant be the only solution?

I think that PND is a chronic low grade allergic response. Having PND doesn't automatically cause bad breath, but the same people with PND also probably have chronic swollen mucus membranes in the sinuses. That's why so many of us have sinus congestion. Our sinuses can't drain properly and there is less airflow. I believe this puts us in greater risk of getting bacteria or fungi trapped in there.
