I am glad you are cured. I have been out of this site for almost three months, I have been out of USA in several countries, unfortunately not on vacation. I was working like hell. The only thing I got a worse BB I am back to square 1 with BB.
Can you tell me where did you the surgery, I would like to have an appoitment with this Dr.
The only thing I ever had is laser on my eyes to correct my vision and that was 8 years ago. I do not go to Dr, only for annual exam.. So I will take the chance this time.
I appretiate the Dr. name, city, and phone.
thanks in advance[/quote]
I went to a Navy hospital. I'm pretty sure my doctor would not be able to help you unless you were in the US Navy or Marines or married to one. Sorry & Best of luck.
Twilight wrote:Hey guys, I had a tonsillectomy/adenoidectomy almost a month ago and I went to a ENT surgeon/facial surgeon. It cost me only $500 up front for the surgery. My insurance covered most of the rest which was around $750 (anesthesia should be around $650). I only ended up paying like $54 dollars of that $800. My insurance is BlueCross BlueShield and PPO. Having already met your deductible make me it even less.
My advice is to make sure you shop around. First, find someone who is good. Second, find someone who isn't too expensive. My doctor had performed over 500 tonsillectomy/adenoidectomies.
By the way, I got the traditional knife method done and my doctor is like a sculptor. He did an amazing job. It's still healing, but as the weeks pass I'm starting to notice less and less places for bad bacteria to thrive.
I'll update you guys on the bb situation later. Pizza is here!
Hey twilight, glad to hear youve had some success. I have the same insurance Blue Cross PPO in California. I was just wondering how you got it covered since in my insurance booklet it says sugeries must be "medically necessary". Now we all know how neccesary these procedures are but Im afraid of how my insurance will interpret that language.
Also, did you have to see someone else first before they refered you to the ENT? I think that I read that you have to go see a general doctor first before you get to see specialists such as ENTs, internists, and podiatrists.
Thanks for your help and I wish you continued success

When I went to see my ENT I kinda lied and told him I was having more sore throats per year than I really was...but not by much. I was actually just recovering from a really bad sore throat and I would get a minor sore throat like everyday before the surgery. I believe if your ENT approves of the tonsillectomy then by default it is deemed "medically necessary", but I'm not 100% sure on this.

Yes, I saw another ENT first with my reason for visiting "bad breath from tonsils". If you specify your reason, rather than saying the general "bad breath", your ENT will get right to issue at hand and is more likely to closely inspect your tonsils. Make sure you have him/her check you adenoids too regardless of whether an odor comes out of your nose or not.
You can schedule appointments directly with ENTs where I live. Like I said, that's what I did at first. The first one I went to didn't perform tonsillectomies however so he gave me a list of all those who do in the area (you might try asking your doc for something like this?) . So I just called around for the soonest available appointment times and that's when I found the ENT surgeon/facial surgeon. You should be able to get everything set up in a single trip to the doc if you call around and see who performs tonsillectomies.
my ENT said that it would take 7 days of healing, and I could not go to work at all during that period. Do you think that's true? I am considering the surgery, but can't take the days off. How painful is this? Too painful to sit at a desk and computer?

It is very painful from day 3 to day 7 or so. I don't function well on pain meds so I couldn't work, but if you know that you do well on pain meds then you will be okay. I would get it done on a Friday and take off Mon. and Tues. at least - if you can.]
Believe it or not I'm still healing. I still have a funny taste in the back of my throat from the scabs so I can't tell yet. I still had pnd recently, but I have hope that that will clear up as soon as my throat heals. It will be hard to tell because my husband and my mom have never smelled my bb. They say that those close to you can't smell it - thank goodness! I know I have it by others comments and reactions. So, I will have to go by that which as you know isn't the most reliable. When I was teaching I'd go by the kids daily reactions and comments. They were great for that. Ten yr. olds can be so dramatic and cruel at times. I'll keep you posted.

ps - there is no more pain from the surgery.
ah, i'm excited for you!
looking forward to your next update
forget pain.. pain i can handle.. it's the non physical pain that gets to me..
I had my tonsils removed on Friday. One of them had many small tonsil stones.
I don`t know if the removal will cure my BB but I am quite optimistic about it.
I`ll keep you updated.
Its been over 5 weeks now. My sense of taste is still off a little and swallowing still feels funny. The pain was completely bareable with all the pain meds I had. The worst part is the weird sensations in my throat, difficulty swallowing and lack of taste. I either don't have or can't detect the foul smell I always had in the back of my throat. I also seem to have fewer negative reactions to me when I talk to people. That said, I still have bad reactions after eating sometimes and drinking beer I believe I may have GERD (without heartburn) which causes me to burp up food/drinks hours after I consume them . My Dr gave me reglan and aciphex to combat this. If this doesn't help after 3 weeks I will then go to a Gastr-Enterologist for esophogeal tests. Yes my surgery helped , but apparently my BB had several causes and sources. Such is life. I used to have PND from casual smoking (and 2nd hand smoke) which complicated things further. I have cured this by not smoking at all and avoiding 2nd hand smoke. Hope I have helped some...
how soon could you eat normal food and drink beer after surgery? It would seem like anything oily, salty, sweey or carbonated would have an adverse effect on the raw inflammed tonsil areas.
GERD is no joke, but I believe you can keep it in check. Eat smaller meals, don't eat right before bed, prop the bed up 10 inches, no chocolate, tomato product, dairy, sweets, dense protein. It is tough and takes discipline, but it will alleviate the digestive process, and keep the esophagus clean.
With PND and acid reflux all getting trapped in the throat/tonsil area... it certainly emits a shitty sour smell and taste in the back of the throat.
After about 7 days I slowly started eating solid foods. I had a few beers after 4 weeks. If my present meds don't help, I'll get tested for hiatal hernia, GERD and anything else. Just so everyone knows, I had coughed-up tonsil stones on 2 different occasions over the years and even though they are tiny (size ranges from buck shot to beebees) they smell REALLY BAD. I was jogging when I coughed up some with phlegm and I could smell them as I jogged away for at least 10 ft!!! The only reason why I coughed them up was once because I had severe bronchitis and the other when I started jogging after having not jogged for yrs (and was still a smoker at that time). If I hadn't had those severe coughing spasms, I'm sure those stones would have remained in my tonsils until the surgery, which was yrs later. If you know you have tonsil stones, I would strongly suggest to have your tonsils removed.
BBNO we sure are going through the same thing at the same time. I too had my tonsils out 5 weeks ago, and I also have been looking into surgery for my hiatal hernia. I'm not sure if my bb is gone yet. As of last week I was still hacking up some pretty nasty mucus - way nastier than any pnd I had before. I feel like there may be more up there. if it persist then I will go back to my ENT. Now I'm just waiting for the okay to have surgery on my HH. I've done all the tests. They don't like to do the surgery because it causes many to have pain after eating for quite some time. I'm not too concerned about this because I am desperate for a cure for my bb and I feel it got worse after I got a HH.
TIREDOFIT: Did you have any symptoms of a Hiatal Hernia? Did you do a Barium test to detect it or something else? I too hacked up alot of phlegm for the first few weeks. It was hard to bring up because my throat muscles were sore and weak from the surgery. Good luck with fixing the HH and please keep us appraised of your progress. I have faith relief is slowly coming our way
