What has reduced your bad breath?

Post by oneday2 »

Hi All,

I've suffered from bad breath for 9 years now and even though I've dealt with this for so long, I feel frustrated that I cannot manage the level of my bad breath. I believe I have room-filling bad breath (and nasal bad breath) and people will recoil when I say something.

I'd like to at least bring it down to a level that's only noticeable when they come very close to me.

My background:
- I've only had one visit with a gastroenterologist who refused to do an endoscopy/other testing if I did not report symptoms of acid reflux
- Tested negative for H. pylori
- Yellow post-nasal drip - both my GP and ENT have stated that this is normal. However, when I scrape my tongue it also has a yellow tint, so I believe these are interconnected
- My ENT has prescribed acid reflux tablets, which unfortunately have made no impact on PND or bad breath
- No allergies
- Chlorhexidine, Smartmouth and Therabreath mouthwashes are not effective, people will still recoil while I am using these mouthwashes
- I do have a thick biofilm which the mouthwashes temporarily eliminate. However, it gets much worse after I stop using these mouthwashes as the bad bacteria repopulates much faster
- Although eating carbohydrates/sugar can make my breath significantly worse, my breath has not gotten noticeably better when I cut it out of my diet (have tried a diet centered around 70% vegetables, 10% fruits and 20% meats and other proteins for about 3 months)
- My breath is at it's worse after eating, but even if I fast, it's also bad
- Lastly, my dentists (I've seen about 4) have all cleared me for any oral hygiene issues (wisdom teeth were extracted).

What has worked for me and may work for you:
- Cleaning my tonsils on a daily basis - I used to have tonsil stones and have not seen a reappearance in about 6-7 years
- Using BOTH a tongue scraper/tongue brush. Adding the brushing element to tongue cleaning will improve your breath at least temporarily.
- Cutting sugar out as much as possible
- Using a Waterpik - aiming it at the lowest energy level at your gumline, in addition to in between your teeth can temporarily reduce bad breath
- Using a nasal saline rinse in the morning reduces any remaining bad smell in my mouth temporarily as it flushes out the PND.

If you have similar symptoms, could you please share what has worked for you? Although we are all working towards a cure, even if we can bring it down to a more manageable level, I think life would be a bit better for all of us.

Thank you in advance.

When I am hungry and my stomach is empty, the taste in my mouth gets really bad, and bb gets absolutely worse.

Soon as I eat, it feels like bb is gone for like 30 minutes or so - but then it comes back, slowly but surely.

I've kind of learned that with doctors if you want them to test you for something you have to make some shit up. A lot of them don't know what they're talking about because they look for the most plausible explanation and also a lot of people don't know if they're not specialists.

I once cut out literally every food except chicken and potatoes. No butter no salt no seasoning. After like 7 days I felt like this must be what normal people feel like but I caved after a week and drank some coffee and alcohol and it came back right away. That shows me that its either a digestive issue or an intolerance thing. Or perhaps because there was sugary carbs to rot in my PND mucus.. who knows

I've seen a lot of people here share the same thing. I'm guessing its related to saliva production and the act of eating clearing out VSC's for a short period of time.

I definitely agree with your first statement. I personally don't have concerning GI issues, but since my ENT and dentist have cleared me, I feel like that's the only untested area left so I'll have to figure out a way to see a GI specialist again.

Have you done any allergy tests / food sensitivity tests? That may help in narrowing the issue down.
I too have random days where I don't have a bitter taste in my mouth and no noticeable PND, so I've started tracking what I eat and my PND levels. So far it's hard to see a clear pattern, so my next step is to try one of those SIBO diets.

I went to a naturapath once who gave me a blood test that tested for food intolerances. I tested having a slight reaction to lots of random things and having a high reaction to brewers yeast. I stopped eating those things (cinnamon, black pepper, oatmeal etc.) and all alcohol except gin and vodka. Honestly I do think its possible that not drinking the yeasty alcohol makes a difference, but I definitely still have bb. It was one of those instances where something maybe helped by like 20% but then you don't really notice it after so long. I haven't had allergy testing but have tried taking anti-histamine pills and/or steroid sinus sprays and that hasn't made a difference. I did have a stool test once that tested negative for candida but showed that I did have an imbalance of good/bad bacteria.

Hi,
I've a similar story lasted almost 15 years, but fortunately I've recently found my "solution".
I've been tested for intestinal dysbiosis and came out my intestine was a mess. I repeated the test after 6 months trying eating better but nothing changed.
I started a cure with probiotics as suggested by my doctor and after 1 month I saw huge improvement.
White tongue is still there, probably due to my GERD, but the terrible smell is almost completely gone.
Now 3 months has passed and I'm still good, not BB free since white tongue will always keep more bacteria than usual but the smell now is normal.
This started probably when I was teenager and my diet was terrible.
Sorry for my english, hope it is helpful.

@Ali M, what probiotics do you take? What strains do they contain?

I can relate a-lot to your story and I really appreciate the way that you presented your results. Take a look at my thread called “I Hope This Helps. 99 Percent BB Free.”

The beginning is a bit long. But as the year or two or so goes by I started refining my research. I don’t have it completely figured out, but I think we are all onto something. The latest thing I saw was a test you can do for bacteria in your mouth. Then get the right stuff to counteract those exact bacterias. Idk. That may be my next step. I am also having a tooth pulled in a couple weeks.

Anyway, I tried to keep all of my posts in one thread so someone(including myself) can more easily follow the history. Keep me posted.

The way you describe what you have and haven’t had success with seems very productive to me. I’d like to hear more of you experiment results.
Thanks

You had very bad BB??
I see you are advanced, so that means you post here a lot?
Do you have one thread that I can see most of your story, successes and failures?
So, you basically ate very clean(chicken and potatoes) for 7 days and you had almost No BB?
And this is after previously(the days prior to the 7) you DID have horrible BB?

I just want to understand what you are saying. I’m not familiar with your posts.
Thanks

Thank you for sharing! I'm glad to hear that you've had a lot of improvement!
I'll definitely bring this up next time with my doctor. Were there any other symptoms you had that indicated you had intestinal dysbiosis?

Hi JustHereToHelp,

Thank you for your kind words!

I just read your post and found it really informative, I appreciate that you also took the time to share what worked and didn't work for you.
I hope that the tooth extraction helps resolve the issue!

I've been following the posts regarding Bristle Health as well, and I'm highly considering that to be my next step if my current efforts don't work.
There's a similar system in my city that's administered by dentists - I've tried it before but the prescriptions they provided (an antibiotic + chlorhexidine) only worked for a short while. I'm giving it another chance while trying to address possible acid reflux/gut issues.

Peter1987 also posted a detailed post on this site as well as on Reddit that I've been following regarding additional supplements, so that may be something to consider as well!

Hey oneday

I just added another post to my thread. I have been pretty darn successful the past few years with diet management, and in emergencies, PPi’s. I believe I may have taken the PPi’s too far. I’m going to really try and tackle this thing. I was eating pretty good for the last month or so, and I had almost no BB. I had very close encounters with people with no reactions. I didn’t push it but I know when it’s bad and it wasn’t. I was though, taking the PPi’s pretty regularly for most of this time. I hadn’t fasted for a 48 hr stretch in a few weeks but I sprinkled in maybe a 24 hr fast here and there. This past weekend I ate very poorly. And in the last couple days my BB has been so bad I cannot go out in public. There’s no way. After reading some posts I hadn’t seen before I realize that the smell coming primarily from my nasal cavity and it definitely smells like sulphur. So does this mean I have SIBO? I will start putting my diet efforts in tackling that issue and I’ll lyk what I find. Maybe you will have similar luck. There’s a lot of posts on here about this issue and people’s findings. I’m still in the process of reading them all so there’s not much I can share to help yet. Talk soon!!
