Yea it really isn't. I thought the sticking your finger in the back of your tounge and doing a rub and smelling was a good test but I'm not so sure now because when it smelled like nothing my sister told me my breath stunk so I'm sort of lost on what's a good test that can be done by yourself.

also these companies do not recommend using mouthwash all the time.....cause it colors your teeth permanently and builds up tartar??? How can it do that if it kills the bacteria?? Hmm I mean sometimes theyd have bad breath but not chronic. I believe mine started when very young. Like 4-7 or something I don't know. I just remember being little and my parents telling me. Haha. I know I probably wasn't brushing good as a kid either so that's another thing.
