Ayurveda, healing from within

Post by ElGrizzle »

Ive been studying ayurveda for quite some time now. Ayurveda is about balancing the body from within so that it can naturally overcome disease.

I have found these writings beneficial. Instead of trying to treat the halitosis, I think we have to look deep within.

"Malabsorption (sprue)

Symptoms:
Váyu: Variable digestion, white spots or ridges
on fingernails, teeth marks on the front arc of the
tongue, constipation, abdominal distention, migrat-
ing pain, dry skin, cracked tongue, hemorrhoids, anal
fissures, emaciation, weak muscles and bones, arthri-
tis. Stools vary from watery to gaseous, hard, and
dry movements. One may experience palpitations,
anxiety, insomnia, depression, and faintness.

Therapies:
General: Light, simple, easily digested meals
depending upon one’s doßha. Yogurt-water (lassi)
improves digestion. If persons are strong, they can
tolerate a lassi fast for several days. Kicharí (basmati
rice and múngdal) should then be introduced into the
diet. Absorption-promoting herbs include cardamom,
fennel, cumin, harítakí, and drákßhá wine.

Váyu: Váyu-reducing foods and lassi with fresh
ginger are beneficial. Herbs taken with meals include
cardamom, pippalí, fresh ginger, cinnamon, fennel,
hi´gwasták, cumin, chitrak, harítakí, laßhuòadi vati,
and drákßhá wine. Useful foods include whole grains
and steamed vegetables (i.e., not eaten raw). "

There are therapies for Pitta and Kapha too, but ive noticed that most of us on here are Vayu constitution (ie.) thin.

Also check this out...

"2. Malodor (púti-násá)—Excess Váyu mixed with
other doßhas in the throat and palate roof causes a
malodorous smell in the nostrils and mouth.
Therapies include applying oil and steam to the
nasal passage, emetics, and purgation, taking light
and moderate meals, drinking boiled water, and nasal
inhalation of the smoke from viæa´ga, pippalí, and
apámárga. Nasal oil is made from mustard oil and
herbs of t^ikatu, hi´gwasták, calamus, ku¤hþha,
viæa´ga, and applied daily. "

I am looking for a good oil on the internet for this. I notice sitting in the steam room at the pool helps. I have the herbs calamus and vidanga, but I am unsure of how to make an oil of them, so I will find it on the internet.

Tell me what you think....

Hi ElGrizzle,

Thank you very much for the info, I have a lot of the symptoms mentioned here, but guess what? I have tried lassi before. yummmm, theyr soooooo gooooooodddddd. I love drinking cold lassi when its hot. I'll make some tomorrow.

if anyone wants to try lassi here's how to make good lassi, well this is how I make it:

I mix a cup of plain yogurt with around a liter of water, and put diced cucumber, and mint leaves with salt in it. oh don't forget the ice, mix it and enjoy!!!!!!!!!!! that's how easy it is to make lassi.

And for nasal oil olive oil can be used. I crushed black onion seed and mixed it with olive oil, and filtered it through some kind of cloth, and then instilled it in my nasal passages, it doesn't cure bb, but relieves sinus pressure, and isn't addicting.

ElGrizzle,

something really funny happened today, I was fasting today, and the first thing I wanted to drink was lassi, but we didn't have cucumber and mint leaves, and i did not want to go drive all the way to a store to get thsoe, so instead i used parsely and made lassi,

It worked as a laxative, lol. not just that, the yogurt reduced my ar. tnx a load for the idea.

Hehehe, yea its funny I just finished writing a post on lassi in another topic. I have more experimenting to do with this. I havent tried it mixed with the digestive spices like Cardamom ,Coriander, and Ginger yet. I will try this in a few minutes.

Anyways... I made up an oil of some of the herbs listed there in.

I put these herbs in olive oil and mustard oil and lightly heated them covered for over an hour:
Calamus(vacha)
Black Pepper
Vidanga
Ginger

Trikatu and Hingwastak are mixtures containing both black pepper, ginger, and many other ingredients I couldn't find.

Once it had completely cooled I strained the mixture slowly through coffee filters and came up with a very pungent, sharp, and potent oil. Wow I thought, should I really put this up my nose? I applied a few drops to each nostril, and it burnt instantly. I continued to lie back, and let the oil absorb into my nasal passages. I stood up and looked into the mirror to make sure my nasal passages where not inflamed or irritated. They were fine, and within a few minutes I felt as if I could dislodge hidden mucous from the nose, so I blew and a whole bunch of lightly green colored mucous came out. Wow, usually my sinuses are congested in a dry way (like Vata/Kapha) like there is no way of getting this stuff out (even with a sinus rinse). This was quite effective, I experienced a complete clearing of nasal passages even with a deviated septum ;) No other spray has come even close to being this effective for instant clearing. I also noticed a fresh taste in the mouth (Yay!) Today I diluted the mixture with more mustard oil(cause I thought it was too strong), and it was not as effective I still feel some dry congestion (my house is very dusty), so I added more of the original mixture back in to return it to original potency, and will try again tommorrow. I am supposed to take this everyday. We will see how a long term treatment works.

Unfortunately I could not get the Kushtha, which shows promise because in ayurveda it is considered "the herb with pleasant smell". Once I clear my sinuses then I will maintain with a decoction of this herb and lighter oils (coconut?)

Sorry for the length here, but, I am acting upon this in a very scientific manner, and must record every observation. Perhaps you will find this useful. I found the oil very effective for treating malodor.

I believe that both the sinus and digestive system act together. I would get stuffed up nose from drinking milk, or eating sugars.

Both sinus and stomach must be purged, nourished, and strengthened, at the same time, strengthening the immune system (using Ashwagandha which has a profound effect on the HPA axis).

I am also taking the herbs Shatvari, and Bramhi. These herbs do too many things to describe in one post check them out in Wikipedia. They are effective used together for many things...

Its going excellent. The medicine I have been using for my nasal passage works wonders. It continues to draw out mucous and keep the passages clear. This allows for a fresh taste in the mouth. And its amazing how there was a blockage in the right nostril for years, and my sinus ENT said it was deviated septum in that direction, yet the medicine clears it and balances the sinus perfectly. Cool!!!

I have also been drinking Lassi with Cardamom and Ginger about 3 times a day after meals for the past week.

I have also been taking Ashwagandha, Shatvari, and Brahmi which I have noticed profound mental and physical benefits.

I am also taking the powder of Vidanga and swishing it in my mouth with warm water after brushing my teeth (morning and night). This improves the taste of my mouth immensely. I also try to brush after every meal just with water.

As far as I know, my breath is clear without the use of antibiotics. I also haven't had any sugars, that definitely helps. So, so far, very good progress.

ElGrizzle, very interesting stuff. Keep us updated at least once a week.

Did you use to have that symptom? Either one of my nostril is partially blocked, not both at the same time, and it alternates every day.

Of all the things you're doing, which one do you think helps the most for your sinuses and breath?

Ok, so, I did not use my sinus oil at all yesterday because I went in a steam room. The last time I used it and I went in a steam room my sinus felt very uncomfortable. So anyways, this morning I woke up and my nasal passages were unclear, and that bad taste in my mouth reappeared, although much less than what it was before, it was definitely apparent.

Continual use of the medicine may be detrimental to keeping the sinuses clear, and bad taste away.

I will know more conclusively whether it is the sinus formula which is working to cure the taste/bb issue. If the taste in my mouth is restored to "fresh" within a week of continual use from this day, then the sinus formula is that which cultivates the fresh taste.

And when I say fresh I mean, the mouth actually tastes good after brushing (the mint becomes refreshing, and the mouth does not turn sour or foul). Its very nice to brush like this.

Oh and Archimonde, mine does not alternate, it is usually the constantly the right nostril that is 25% blocked. With the use of the medicine both nostrils are balanced and clear, amazing! Unfortunately not today, I should have used it yesterday.... lol

Ok so... I decided to use the formula for the rest of the week. And I had nothing but open passages and a fresh taste in my mouth(yay!). I then decided to stop using it for a few days cause I figured I didn't need to use it anymore. after about three days I can feel an accumulation of mucous in the back of the nasal passages, and it does have that bad taste/ smell. From my experiment I can conclude that for me, the nasal passage is one cause.

Now secondly. I am generally constipated. While I was on Flagyl I was not, and had no BB. Now that I am not on Flagyl (its been about a month), I am back to constipated. I have been constantly drinking plain yoghurt with a wide variety for probiotics (just so you know). But I noticed that I ate a large meal right before bed(im trying to gain weight). In the morning there was a lingering fart smell, even though I havn't been farting. This is most likely attributed to stagnant feces/digestion (probably the reason I am so thin in the first place). And look here....

'Constipation (Ãnáha)
Signs of a Healthy Colon: No tongue coating, easy
passing of stool immediately upon waking in the
morning. Stools should float (not sink), two to three
stools daily.

Signs of an Unhealthy Colon: The back third of
the tongue is coated, stools sink, one or no stools
passed daily.

Causes: Eating foods that are difficult to digest
and/or are Váyu-increasing; developing as a result of
fever or infection, sleeping too much, suppressing
the urge to defecate. Other causes include a hectic
lifestyle, sexual intercourse in the morning (weakens
the downward flow of air/Apána Váyu), coffee or tea
in the morning (is drying), and a lack of exercise.
Mental causes include excess emotions (e.g., worry,
fear, anxiety, anger, impatience, nervousness.)

Symptoms:
Váyu: Dry colon, gas (with or without pain),
abdominal distention, brownish coating on the back
of the tongue, bad breath, anxiety, headache (because
air is pushed upward instead of down and out with
the stool), urge to urinate but difficulty passing urine.

Therapies:
General: The best herb for the colon is triphalá,
which draws toxins from the colon and promotes
toning, rejuvenation, and the passage of stool. It is
taken in the morning and evening (1/2 to 1 tsp. with 4
times as much water). Triphalá is a gentle and mild
laxative made from three fruits, ámalakí, bibhítakí,
and harítakí. To achieve a stronger effect, ginger is
added to the mixture and harítakí is doubled in
quantity. When passing stool, squatting is a more
natural position for bowel movements.

Váyu: Váyu-reducing foods, liquids, and life-style
are required. Ingesting ghee and sesame oil will
moisten the colon, as will dairy and small quantities
of oily foods like almonds and sesame tahini. Boiled
milk with ghee and cinnamon are good to take before
bed. Digestive herbs include ginger, cardamom, and
fennel. Triphalá is excellent, but castor oil (2 tsp. in a
cup of boiled water before bed) is stronger and may
be required if triphalá is not effective. Castor oil doses
need to be adjusted (more or less) according to
individual needs. Herbs to boost digestion are also
required; they include rock salt, hi´g, lavaò bháskar
chúròa. Ishabgol (2 tsp.) taken in 1 cup of warm water
before bed also relieves constipation. Dry foods (e.g.,
cabbage family, chips, beans) increase gas and
constipation. Non-oily and oily enemas are also useful
(see Chapter 7). "

Oh its cool too if you wikipedia Triphala, all the research on the amazing stuff that it does.

I also did a bit of research on Ishabgol... check it out

"Ishabgol
Hindi: Isapghul
English: Ispaghula or Spogel Seeds
Latin: Plantago ispagula; P. ovata Forsk.
Part Used: Seeds
Habitat: Throughout India
Energetics: Cold, astringent VPK=
Systems: Digestive/Excretory
Action: Demulcent, emollient, laxative, diuretic
Uses: Excellent for constipation (with warm wa-
ter) and diarrhea (with cold water). Seed swell
and thicken (mucilage) when soaked in water. It
passes through the small intestine undigested, lin-
ing the mucus membrane (demulcifying and lu-
bricating). May inhibit intestinal organism growth.
The thickened jelly absorbs toxins (áma) and bac-
teria. It is useful for catarrh, chronic dysentery,
intestinal problems, bladder, kidney and urethra
problems (including inflammations and burning),
digestive disorders, and fevers. Further uses include
gonorrhea, gastritis, gastric and duodenal ulcers,
cystitis, a demulcent for coughs and colds (espe-
cially for children).
Preparation: 1-2 tbs. in warm or cold water, stirred
until it thickens into a gel "

Kinda sounds like clay and psyllium husk. [/b]

Yes, I have had this before. Eating sugar.... sitting or laying in my room for long periods of time, I procure a fecal smell without farting.
