Best toothpaste and mouthwash product?
Best toothpaste and mouthwash product?
Just wondered what people have found as the best toothpaste and mouthwash product they have found to reduce or slightly control their BB.
I have tried many different types but have yet to find a decent combo.
I am in the UK and have tried:
Arm and Hammer Baking Soda with Calcium
Colgate Maxfresh beads and strips
Colgate Total
Colgate oxygen (anyone know if this is oxygenating toothpaste)
Corsodyl toothpaste
Retardex (seems to make my bb worse)
Dr Katz toothpaste
Tung Zinc tongue gel
For mouthwashes I have tried
Colgate Peroxide
Corsodyl (Chlorhexidine)
Colgate non alcohol
Dentyl pH
Any products people recommend?
I will try 3% hydrogen peroxide diluted with water shortly.
At the moment I brush with arm and hammer followed by colgate oxygen to get the fresh minty feel which the arm and hammer toothpaste doesnt provide.

I think Colgate Total is good (contains Triclosan). I have a couple of areas that regularly smell when I floss my teeth. The teeth and gums are healthy, but they are just bad for trapping food because my teeth are overcrowded. Aquafresh Extreme Clean Pure Breath with Zinc (used morning and night) completely stops this odour from building up.
does anybody know any toothpastes you can buy in your average store, which dont contain sodium lauryl sulphate(i think thats what it is called). i swear sometimes my mouth feels fresher if i dont brush my teeth(however bizarre that sounds) and i am wondering if the toothpaste i use is drying my mouth out

I definitely solved what was causing my mouth to turn into sewage. Doesnt mean to say my breath is perfect or the taste in my mouth is perfect. But My mouth feels neutral compared to how it was before and i am assured that my breath is not bad the way it had been since my mid teens.
I've never tried other toothpastes containing zinc. If I use it twice daily I get no odours when I floss my teeth. I've actually just bought some listerine containing zinc. Isnt quite as effective as the toothpaste containing zinc, probably because toothbrushing forces it through the teeth more effectively.
I think any toothpaste containing zinc chloride will do the same.

Hal, what you made you retract from your no mouthwash policy? I haven't used mouthwash for 3 months (give or take) and overall I'd say my breath is at least somewhat better because of that. However, I would love to find a mouthwash that actually helped. Retardex definitely made my breath a lot worse as did every mouthwash I tried as far as I'm aware.halitosisux wrote: I've actually just bought some listerine containing zinc. Hi Brightonguy,
I still have a no-longterm-antibacterial-mouthwash policy. By pure chance I needed some new toothpaste and noticed the Aquafresh with Zinc at Tescos at half price so I bought it. To my surprise I found that areas which regularly smell when I floss my teeth no longer smelled at all, not even faintly. I bought the Listerine (with zinc chloride) mouthwash to compare it to this toothpaste and its nowhere near as effective.
Retardex is an antibacterial and gives the impression of being effective because it has similar odour neutralizing properties as bleach. For most people its effective to begin with, but that soon wears off.
Zinc has a neutralizing effect but also inhibits the production of VSCs without disturbing the microbial balance.
And although Triclosan is an antibacterial and a bacterial inhibitor, I dont think it's effect wears off.

@ hal, I'm going to buy that exact toothpaste and give it a shot!
@ hope, I'm one of those people that can smell my own BB hence how I figured it out. Aydinmur's experiments with various mouthwashes including Retardex showed that they all increased BB by 25% (in VSC terms) with the exception of a zinc containing product. I used a therabreath mouthwash for a while containing zinc, can't say that helped me at all. I also tried therabreath gum containing zinc and that definitely made my breath worse. All gum I've ever tried just makes it worse for me.

Why is retardex a specialised product yet makes the condition it is suppose to help worse?
I have always felt my bb was worse using retardex mouthwash and toothpaste but kept on using them because I thought it must help my bb even though my mouth felt less fresh.
After a while I just couldnt continue with retardex due the feeling it gave me.
Am now trying the Aqua fresh and initial thoughts are that it is a good toothpaste. It however, doesnt appear to be the magic bullet that we all are seeking though as I still dont feel 100% fresh all the time (unlike 2 yrs ago pre bb era) even despite my significant improvement following my recent metronidazole treatment.

dr. aydinmur, how about stabilized chlorine dioxide?
also, are there any adverse reactions if i use baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and a stabilized chlorine dioxide mouthrinse all on the same day?
and if mouthrinses should not contain sorbitol/xylitol/sweeteners, does that also hold true for chewing gums? there are a lot of sugar free "breath freshening" gums in the market, but they all contain xylitol, sorbitol, or some other form of artifiicial sweetener. is that bad?
thanks and looking forward to your response

Hi it's been some time since I have been on this board and I was wondering a few things:aydinmur wrote:I prefer Tung Zinc tongue gel. Best of bad.bbuk wrote: Arm and Hammer Baking Soda with Calcium

A good halitosis rinse should contain:
1- Zinc compound
2- Antiseptic (cetylpyridinium chloride, chlorhexidine, Benzalconiumchlorid, Dequanilium chloride, Hydrogen peroxide etc)
A good halitosis rinse should NOT contain:
1- alcohools,
2- anti inflamatuar (benzidamin HCl)
3- SLS (sodium Lauryl Sulphate)
4- Sodium hydroxyde
5- Flavor, saccharin or any sweetener
6- Menthol, Aspartame, Xylitol, Sorbitol, Lecithine, any carbonate
Unfortunately and surprisingly, many halitosis rinse contain above chemical compounds even they also contain zinc compund.

Have you tried making your own mouthwash?
If so, can you make a mouthwash with hydrogen peroxide and zinc ion liquid combined? Is there chance they will interact and render it non-reactive?
How about a mixture containing sodium bicarbonate and zinc ion?
I tried to do a search for the long term use of HP thread but was unable to find it, could you provide me a link?
I am contemplating making my own 'zinc gum', with a simple bubble gum recipe, this way I can control what goes into it. Do you think zinc administered through gum all day long would be an effective method to reduce VSC's?
What are your thoughts on Ozostomia? I have had post nasal drip for quite some time and I feel that this is the 'fuel' that feeds the anaerobic bacteria. I understand they like to dine on the protein rich mucus that is constantly stuck at the back of my throat. I am starting allergy medicine in hopes of reducing the mucus output.
Quite a few questions, but any responses would be greatly appreciated
thanks
