I've never been diagnosed, but i've had IBS like symptoms in the past too, often made worse by foods with gluten.

To the people trying bismuth and antiobiotics for h. pylori: is anyone planning on doing both at the same time? Does the bismuth prevent proper absorption of the antibiotics?

I finally got the prescriptions for the antibiotics, after a delay from the holidays. Not sure if i'll do both at once.

Hi TeamZissou,
If i remember correctly Pepto-bismol used to be prescription only, like lots of other acid controlling medicines too. There's different types of Bismuth, and its worth checking to find out which, but one of these was part of the therapy against HP, and i think it still is used in certain circumstances.
Apart from reducing the acididy inside the stomach (because acid interferes with the antibiotics) its antibacterial properties also weaken the HP which assists the effects of the antibiotics.

Thanks for the reply Halitosisux.

I'm not entirely sure how pepto and other bismuth-containing substances work. I was always under the impression they coated the esophagus and stomach. It sounds like this could have an impact on absorption to some degree, which could maybe impact the ability of the antibiotics to get into the blood stream.

Not sure if that is correct or not. But if you're saying that bismuth used to be part of the h. pylori treatment, then I guess that isn't true.

Hi TeamZissou,

http://www.helico.com/treat_therapy.html
Pepto-bismol is part of some of the therapies on there (bismuth subsalicylate).
I dont know whether this has sole benefit against HP or whether it generally improves the effect of antibiotics in general. But just incase HP itself is behind the BB you'll be wanting this therapy to eliminate it.
It depends on which combinations of drugs you are taking, such as whether it includes omeprazole for example.
As long as whatever combination is chosen is effective against HP and contains metronidazole, for the longest course duration possible, then this is what we're aiming for, in the hope that for whatever reason some people were cured of BB has a chance of happening for others too, whether HP eradication was involved or not.
Most importantly... good luck!!

12th day of my triple med therapy for H. Pylori.

-Amoxicillin
-Prilosec
-Biaxin

BID for 14 days.

Some slight decreas in breath odor, but stomach is doing pretty good. I don't think this will be our answer to our problem. I really thinking about doing the Apple cider vinegar. I was looking briefly through a book on apple cider vinegar (ACV) and it's benefits...wow it has so many good properties. I think it's worth a try. I bought a bottle of "organic" ACV. I will try this after I complete my triple therapy.

HI,

Girlie Girl. I dont really think that this antibiotic will help everyone.

My H. pylori test came back negative. And I some how have a sinus infection. Been dealing with it so far with 7 days amoxicillin. NO IMPROVEMENT IN BAD BREATH. NO HELP>

In fact, I have another stack of antibiotics but I think I wont take anymore. MY bad breath did not improve at all.

When I belched I could smell the antibiotic. The antibiotic smelled awful really awful. I can only guess what the rest of my sweat, urine etc smell like on this antibiotic because I seem to have lost my sense of smell.

I AM GIVING UP MY ANTIBIOTICS AS OF NOW> THEY DONT WORK FOR ME>

Hey Girlie Girl,

That's a bit of a disappointment, I was going to try my triple therapy at the end of the month. I'll probably still give it a go a see what happens. At least it hasn't upset your stomach much, how about thrush, have you had any problems with this, in your mouth and other areas?

Sorry to hear that girlie girl,

Its not yet understood why some people who took therapy to eradicate HP appeared to cure their BB. Its possible that it had nothing to do with HP at all, and that the medication eradicated something somewhere else. I know that while i've taken amoxicillin in the past my BB didnt change at all. In complete contrast metronidazole completely wiped out the BB while i've taken it. I cant comprehend why anyone trying this antibiotic experiment would choose not to take metronidazole.

Its also possible that you have developed resistance to amoxicillin or other antibiotics if you've taken any of these in the past, especially if they were taken for short durations.

Team Zissou,

I'll be really interested to hear how this goes for you as you're taking metro (I'm also going to try the metro). Fingers crossed that your bb won't come back when you've finished the course (how long are you taking it for?) Good luck, and keep us updated.

Hey bbttt,

You shouldn't take the probiotics 2 hours either side of the antibiotics. I wouldn't think the aloe vera would effect or interact with anything, but I can't be sure.

Just in case anyone is taking St John's Wort, you should stop this at least a week before taking acid blockers as it stops these working.

Hope this helps, good luck! :)
