BB and diseases of the body
Hi all,
I have been reading on the internet and found this info. Might be useful/ or not.
? Did anyone find out that their bad breath was due to any of these by getting testing in the last 3-6 months?
A fruity odor to breath or sweat, for example, can indicate a diabetic condition.
There?s often a characteristic cheesy odor in sweaty feet syndrome.
The researchers from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine say body odor also varies by race, gender and age.
Here is a list of metabolic disorders and the characteristic odors they?re associated with:
--Unpleasant or foul odors: syphilis, genital warts, leg ulcers, abscess, dry gangrene and herpes.
--Stale beer: Tuberculosis.
--Cheesy, sweaty: Sweaty feet syndrome, Pitted keratolysis.
--Rotten-egg-like/fishy
: liver failure
--Fruity aroma of old apples: Diabetic conditions
--Maple syrup-like: Maple syrup urine disease.
--Foul, grape-like: Burns, wounds
--Sweet: Skin diptheria, candida infection.
--Urine-like: Renal failure (uremia)
Now don?t try to diagnose yourself by looking at lists like this. This is not an exact science. If you?re worried about a particular body odor, go see a physician to track down its cause.
Let me know what you think?

Hi Halihope,
Do you know wht your breath smells like now?
Is it still sulfur type smell like before?
Also, have you recently tested for system things like h.pylori, diabetes, liver etc? Just a question. Sometimes bad breath can be a sign that something is wrong with our body. Esp. If it doesnt improve with normal brushing routine.

Hi
I just wanted to add to the list of systemic/internal causes of BB which doesnt improve.
H.pylori infection-spoke to a doctor recently who confirmed it can cause foul odours
intestinal parasites-these can cause foul odours.
I think its better to get an overal health check from a sympathetic, caring and knowledgeable doctor instead of not knowing if these can be related to BB.
Many people here dont have severe bad breath so of course these wont relate to them, maybe?
But for those who have severe bad breath which doesnt inprove with brushing, flossing, scraping, gargling mouthwash, then seriously look into these cause and go to a doctor to get yourself checked out.
I am in the process of getting checked out. I am awaiting some test results and will let you know if any turned up any cases of systemic disease. From what I understand sometimes people can have systemic disease or intestinal parasites and not know.
I will see my doctor on monday for an H.pylori test and tapeworm test.
You never know for sure until you are tested.

Hi DRASTIC I suspected my bb smelled fecal. Recently I was able to smell it, while brushing my left wisdom teeth I tilted my head to the left and I could smell my bb and indeed is fecal. It seemed that while brushing that side of my tongue it also smelled and while brushing the right side of it I did not smelled it. I believe that either I need deep cleaning even though dentists says I don't have pockets in my gums or pnd is coming from left nostril since the bone is lopsided and sort of interferes with my breathing. As far as infections or liver problems I have neither, I just saw my kidney doctor yesterday and he had me check this last Monday.

I was sitting next to a guy in class and he kept saying he smelled acetone which is a medical term that means fruity breath, I was chewing some berry gum. I was just wondering what he meant by that. Do you think he was trying to say my breath was stinking, cuz people with fruity breath have diabetes?

Hi all,
whilst doing some research I came across another condition which may cause foul odours.
This isnt just sinusitis.
This is called Atrophic Rhinitis.
The condition causes
foul smell esp. from nose
nasal crusting
sometimes bleeding nose
loss of smell
apparently this can be caused by hormone imbalance, lack of vitamins A and D, as well as even nose surgery.
Atrophic rhinitis
Common symptoms of atrophic rhinitis include:
nasal crusting,
a foul or unpleasant smelling odour (produced by the crust),
a nose bleed may occur if you try to remove the crusts, which may lead to
a loss of the sense of smell (anosmia).
It is said to affect menopausal women but can also start at puberty in females and continue right up to adult stage as well, also infection can be present.
Based on my research this condition can be enough to fill a whole roomwith foul smell.
Diagnosis is by Ctscan at hospital.
Treatment
The most common treatment for atrophic rhinitis is nasal irrigation. This involves using a syringe to fill the nasal cavities with a saline solution (a mix of salts and water). This helps reduce crusting and dryness.
Antibiotics can also be used to treat any infection, and reduce, or remove, the offensive odour.
There are several surgical treatments that can be used to treat atrophic rhinitis. These are listed below.
Young's operation - this involves surgically closing the affected nasal cavity to allow it to heal without becoming infected. After a period of time, normally around nine months, the cavity is then reopened.
Nasal narrowing operation - this procedure aims to narrow the affected nasal cavity by using grafted bone, or cartilage, or, sometimes, artificial materials, such as Teflon, or silicon. Narrowing the cavity leads to a reduction of the levels of crusting, and can also improve airflow within the nose.
Just thought I would let you guys know what I found out so far.

Hi Drastic
I probably possess the same type of bb that you have.
Maybe you want to get an oral chroma test so you`ll know whether you have dimethyll sulfide in the blood. It`s a newly found cause of bb & I have a hunch that most severe types suffer from this. Another condition that you may want to get tested for is small intestinal bacterial overgrowth.Anyways, goodluck with your tests.

Hi jc,
Thanks for the suggestions. I will add those to my list so when I see my doctor i have a list of possible test to do. I am still awaiting some test which I had done recently. I pray and hope that the results come back normal and that there is nothing life threatening. Although having BB can become life threatening if you let it at times.
Fingers cross that the results will be in by today.
I still need to do h.pylori, intestinal parasites, oral chroma, intestinal bacterial test.

Hi Halitosisux,
Thanks for the useful website.
i havent yet been tested for h.pylori. I have been to several doctors countless GP and they were quite rude to me. I remember one telling me she cant smell an odour because she had a cold. One said she is not going to request any unnecessary test for me if nothing is wrong with me. Another one ignored me and ran me away told me to go to dentist. So, you see I have not had much luck with GPs like many of you already know.
Even when I requested the test they ignored me and said nothing is wrong with me.
SO, I am in the process of changing GP at the moment to one that is more understanding. I was told recently by a doctor that not many GPs know about treating Chronic halitosis. He even admited that he didnt know much about it until a recent training course. So, he said if the GP isnt willing to listen to me then I should go to another GP and change doctors till one will approve the test needed. the other option is to go private but that is too expensive since i dont work.
But, i will let you know what the other test results were.
Thanks again for website. Will add it to my log of research material.

Hi Drastic,
Thanks for your reply, i know how exactly how you feel regarding certain doctors and the negativity that their attitudes can sometimes instil in us in these situations. We have to fight that by remembering that one way or another there is an answer for each of us and we must continue persuing until we find it. While anyone on here still has avenues to explore, there is always hope.
Purely out of curiousity, are you aware that for around £5 most pharmacies in the UK sell self-test h.pylori kits? They are not 100% reliable tests by their nature, but when used correctly and instructions followed, they are fairly reliable. In the meantime, go to any doctor and tell them you have been suffering lately with gastritis - they are obliged to test for hp presented with the symptoms, so calmly insist on this - dont mention BB! - Unfortunately, at times we have to employ more shrewed tactics with problems the general medical profession even admit to knowing very little about.. good luck.
