how to examine tonsils

Im going to the ENT wed to try and convince him to removed my tonsils and adenoids. I would like to get an idea of whats going on with my tonsils before going in.....but i cant even see mine no matter how wide i open my mouth and crane my neck.

so how are you guys seeing white spots or squeezing growths. Also when ever i even reach back there i gag before examining anything.
