really mad, just had appointment with new dentist. basially just said 'o its due to poor hygiene', when my hygiene is impeccible! all other dentists have said so and i know myself. i was so annoyed, and he just kept saying its 'quality not quantity' and kept trying ot sell me their eletric tooth brushes and other off the counter products that DO NOT WORK. i'm sick of these dentists that know f--- all!

i then started to doubt my hygene as he made me feel like a filthy urchin, but i know this is not the case. no idea why i thought he would help

he said there was slight areas of plaque build up. could this cause this?!!? he seems to think so. would plaque dissolving tablets help? can a bit of plaque cause this smell/taste. he also said inital signs of periodontitis. why have no other dentitsts touched on any of this- is it a contributing factor?

im going back next week for a 'scale and polish.' what use is that.

o im so annoyed

To answer your question; Yes, plaque has a foul odor associated with it's ability to deprive the given location of oxygen. Sulfur compounds are produced and depending on the quantity and type of associated bacteria, the end result can end with any one or combination of the smell below.

# Putrescine - the compound responsible for much of the foul odor produced by decaying meat.
# Skatole - the characteristic smell of human fecal matter.
# Isovaleric Acid - the smell of sweaty feet.

You should be thankful you have a dentist who noticed the plaque and is being pro-active about removing it. I say go ahead with the deep cleaning, It isn't very painful and goes a long way toward re-establishing a favorable environment for "good" bacteria to flourish.
