I have horrible breath that you could smell across a room. I've overheard people say that it smelled like dead fish, however when I took birth control pills called Demulen 1/50 or Demulen 1/35 it went away in 3 days. Other birth control pills did not stop the problem. When my HMO stopped giving Demulen and replaced it with a generic called Zovia 1/35 or 1/50, the bad breath came back. I can no longer take birth control pills because I am postmenopausal. So, I started doing some research to determine why one birth control pill gets rid of the bad breath and the generic form does not. I researched on the Internet and discovered that the active ingredients were exactly the same, however the inactive ingredients were different. The difference is that Demulen has calcium acetate, calcium phosphate, hydrogenated castor oil and povidone and the generic does not have these ingredients. It made me wonder if the calcium acetate in the ingredients was what cured the problem so I have begun taking calcium carbonate (Caltrate) to see if that helps. Calcium acetate is a phosphate binder (prescription only) and clears the blood of phosphate when foods high in phosphorus are eaten, so maybe that was my problem all along. Calcium Carbonate can also be used as a phosphorus binder but can cause toxicity, so check with your doctor. Since my breath has a fishy smell, I'm thinking that my kidneys may be the problem because of foods that are high in phosphates, (milk, meat etc). I will also be on a vegetarian diet with no dairy to see if this helps while taking the Caltrate. So for females on this website, maybe Demulen 1/35 or 1/50 could be your cure or calcium supplements. Oh, I also have a condition called Insulin Resistance with all the symptoms that go with that, so I am recently on a low glycemic diet.
