My breath truly stank , my saliva always stank , and my tongue was horrible stinky smelling too.
i thought this was the life i was always going to have - BUT - recently i tried 2 antibiotics , metrozandole and flucazonole .

After treatment ,
MY tongue has no smell whatsover even right down the back and saliva is always neutral - even 1st thing in the morning.

I am also perceiving less reactions , so the BB is still there maybe not as bad as it once was.
i can also smell the BB more often (specially in a crowded room)- before the treatment i could hardly smell the BB.

does anyone have any ideas where i go from here??

Are you sure the BB you are saying you are still able to detect, is actual bad breath? It could be something as simple as the skin around your nostrils or some degree of (normal) body odour. Once we've been made paranoid about odour, its very hard to get out of the habit of being concerned about odour. We become fixated with it and the slightest thing gets blown out of all proportion in our minds.

Is anyone able to give you some reliable feeback on this?

I hate to put a damper on this, but several members of this forum have reported that their bad breath diminished while using Metronidazole and Flucanozole, but returned when they discontinued the medicine.

That would indicate that the underlying cause of BB was not eliminated, or that the anaerobic bacteria became immune to the antibiotics.

firebreath, how long ago did you complete the HP treatment? If BB is going to return after taking metronidazole, it usually does so within a day or two because once the metro has cleared your system the bacteria in your mouth revert to how they were prior to the treatment. But if your improvement has continued for a week or two then the BB this may indicate that your BB is related to somewhere other than your natural oral bacteria - infection in your sinuses for instance, helicobacter, teeth or gum infection etc, even TMAU or TMAU related causes.

ihatethebus, yes some people have found that the pores of the skin around their nose is giving the perception that the air around them smells foul. This can be very deceiving. Try placing any pungent odour near or on your nostrils and see how powerful that can be at deceiving your brain and making it feel as though the air around you smells.

@ sux , been about a week now, since treatment finished,my ton gue is now more cleaner, has absloutely no odour at all , even if i rub really hard against the back as far as my fingers can reach and saliva is always neutral .
Coffee , etc has zero effect on the smell of my tongue,
This alone has made me more positive a person , since food has no effect on the smell of my tongue.

However,i do get that BB taste when i swallow water,so something is producing the BB bacteria somewhere down the back BUT my fingers cannot reach that far.

i still get reactions so its still there.

Its good that your BB hasnt returned straight after stopping the metronidazole, and hopefull it never will. The reason it hasnt (yet) might offer you some important clues.

Usually when there is an oral cause or some abnormality is causing an excessive amount of bacterial activity in the mouth, BB returns almost overnight when you stop metronidazole. The fact it hasnt might therefore indicate that your BB is due to something going on elsewhere, such as in your gut (i.e. SIBO or secondary TMAU) or in your sinuses for example, and that the course of metro has managed to bring such a situation under control somewhat.

If you are gauging your BB by reactions alone then you have no hope of knowing the true situation.

Do you still have tonsils? maybe your tonsils have stones in them which you dont realise. That will give you a horrible taste when you swallow.

I think those antibiotics has the same immediate effect on majority of bb sufferers, unfortunately bb comes back right after we stop medicine (happened to me too). Considering we have only a few chances of using these antibiotics before bacteria become immune, we should be very careful. Avoid using them just for a few days/weeks of relief. It seems, the most logical approach would be seeing specialists till we are completely satisfied. There are tons of posts showing all possible causes of bb, eliminate them 1 by 1. Be patient, we have lived with this terrible condition for long years, a few more weeks/months won't hurt. Drink 1.5-2 L water/day, follow strict cleaning procedures and a sugar/dairy free diet. Believe me the previous sentence alone will help your bb a lot, it won't go away but you will feel more confident. When the sources are eliminated we can use the aforementioned antibiotics as a last resort. The idea behind this approach is: Bacterial balance in our mouth are changed somehow. Even if we fix the problem which started this chain reaction, it might not restore the balance in our mouth. This is what I think.

thanks guyz for the advice, the problem is that the BB has been there during treatment and after , so i am still not cured .
The thing that bugs me is my tongue and saliva no longer smell,I test my self daily many times , I only pick a very , very , faint odour if my mouth is really dry - and it really is very faint (if nothing at all) , and that is my fingers off directly from the back of my tongue - the saliva has no smell at all even when i do a very thorough version of the lick test.

I am pondering that maybe there is something else that is causing the smell - maybe PND or something , I simply do not know or maybe my gums need a deep clean?

Considering the stink that my tongue had before,i think there is a reduction in the odour - but still get negative reactions and can taste it sometimes down the very back of my throat/tongue.

i have been doing lick tests and smelling the back of my tongue now for about a week since treatment stopped.
results were positive no smell at any time.

However,
last night,i noticed the same BB smell from the back of my tongue - before i started the antibiotics.

And it seems more stronger today too,so my guess is that my mouth will return to it previous stinky state soon.
Saliva is sour too.

the middle of my tongue was always pinkish after treatment, but is now going back to its former yellowish / white .

Now , do not get me wrong , as stated many times the BB was ALWAYS there during and after the treatment,But something happened that killed the bacteria to some extent on my tongue.

Should i go back the doctor and get him to give me a more potent dosage?

Any ideas?

Hi Firebreath,

I'm not sure if you've seen my thread on here but Metronidazole has 'cured' me twice now. The first dose gave me 8 weeks of beinfg bb free until I got a really bad strain of flu which I felt brought my bb back. I went back to the doctors and explained the situation and he gave me another course and it has been 4 weeks since I got a whiff. I was concerned that the bacteria may become immune to Metronidazole but its seems to work for me. Its got to be worth asking for it again if you think it helps.

Have to consider that the improvement metronidazole gives for some may have nothing at all to do with its effect on oral bacteria, but its effect on the intestinal flora, especially when the beneficial effect lasts this long.

Halitosisux,
I think you have a good point there. This would indicate that some forms of bad breath come from the intestines, despite the fact that all doctors deny it. I have suspected it for a long time.
