Bad Breath Halitosis Forum

I've been a lurker on these forums for over a year now.
Thanks to everyone who has posted information.

I'm gonna try a 10-day cycle of Metronidazole. I was originally going to digest this antibiotic, but I have recently read that I should avoid digesting it and should try gargling it as a mouthwash instead.

My question is, is there really a difference between gargling or digesting?

This will be my first time trying Metronidazole. I understand I should take a probiotic to help my body maintain or create good bacteria. I've also read that I should take a probiotic either 2 hours prior or after I take the Metronidazole.

Basically, my understanding of Metronidazole is pretty vague and I should be receiving the antibiotic tomorrow. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I've gotten my tonsils out,
wisdom teeth out,
followed up extensively with my dentist to rule out any dental-related causes of BB.
I have had several appts with ENT's and gastroenterologists, i've had an upper esophageal barium exam
and a lower one as well,
the latter wasn't too fun I may add.
I can see that my esophagus is red and looks inflamed.
I'm hoping the antibiotics will help shed some light. I'm looking to find out the best way to take them. I read that taking Metronidazole with omeprazole and pepto bismol may be my best bet

I'm going to gargle it and see how that works.

I'm wondering if i should still follow the protocol for taking Metronidazole if I will not be digesting it. Do I need to follow it with a probiotic?

If you suspect your BB is Type 1 gargling with metronidazole may potentially be effective for you. If you suspect your BB is Type 2, 3 or 4 ingesting it would probably be the better option. As for the probiotics even if you are not ingesting the metronidazole I’d still take them if I were you just to be on the safe side. Hope this helps. Cheers, C

If BB occurs while breathing out of my nose, is that an indication my BB is type 2?

If the odor is coming from your nose, it could be due to a sinus infection. But I would think those cases are rare, and you would have additional symptoms such as post nasal drip, congested nasal passages and headaches.

Be careful with the Mitronidazole. It is an antibiotic, and if you take an antibiotic in the wrong dosage and for the wrong amount of time, it will leave bacteria that are immune to the antibiotic, and they will be even more difficult to kill than before.

Phantasist is right. Be careful with antibiotics.

Possibly. Things that can potentially cause nasal odours:

-Tonsils and adenoids
-Wisdom teeth
-Esophageal candidiasis
-Parasites

Since the first 2 don’t apply to you and your esophagus is enflamed have you looked into the possibility of esophageal candidiasis?
