don't put too much in your mouth. lean your head back and open your mouth and stick your tongue as far out as it will go (to make sure the rinse goes as far back as possible on the tongue), and breathe out as you do it. you can make vocal sounds as you do it if you wanna make sure you are breathing out. breathing out keeps it from going down your throat.. you will hear bubbling sounds

Try holding out your tongue as far as it can go. Most of your tongue dorsum is exposed when you do this. If you then allow your throat to seal around your tongue while holding out your tongue in this way, and then lean back and allow whatever it is you are hoping to gargle with to rest on your tongue surface, its probably more effective than gargling. You'll probably choke until you get the hang of it and make a good seal.
Gargling probably only gives the impression its doing anything back there because of the vapours that you sense through your nose and throat, but in reality if a single drop of liquid, such as mouthwash, gets onto any part of your throat you'll immediately start choking.
