To connect the dots between bad breath and use of PPIs, I called Daily Health News consulting medical editor Andrew L. Rubman, ND, who has spent many years studying the digestive system and its problems. He explains that because a PPI drug suppresses stomach acid, which of course is its purpose, it robs the stomach of an important protection. Digestive acid, among other things, makes the stomach relatively aseptic, which keeps bacteria, yeast and mold from proliferating. But if you take away the acid, the stomach no longer has what it needs to defend itself and it becomes vulnerable to these unwanted microorganisms. Dr. Rubman says that yeast settles in and ingests the stomach lining and this in turn creates debris that contributes further to bacterial growth... and that causes bad breath.
The solution, as I have often written about, isn't to rob your stomach of its valuable acid but instead to create a digestive environment that allows acid to be present when it is needed -- that is with meals -- and not there when it isn't called for, which is between meals. Dr. Rubman advises occasionally using something like Pepto-Bismol to ease GERD rather than the powerful PPI drugs. Unlike PPIs, Pepto-Bismol coats the lining to soothe it. He recommends that you change how you approach food as well. Avoid snacking and eat only at meal time, which will help maximize your supply of stomach acid at meal time... chew your food thoroughly to maximize the digestive process... and limit the amount of fluids you drink with meals so as not to dilute the valuable acids now at work. There are also digestive enzymes available on-line and at health food stores that offer a natural way to assist your digestive system.
this article suggest what i thought after compiling everything i learned together first get the digestion environment on tract by cleanses, detoxing, and repopulating then building up the immune system.
Same here too... I always drink at least half a litre of water with any food I eat.
I went on a cruise a while ago, when I was on this cruise my BB totally disappeared - I first put it down to my stress levels being relieved as I was on holiday but all the while I kept thinking what Im I doing different... The food I was eating was plentiful as it was all inclusive, I was eating more than normal and the food wasn't that healthy to be honest. The difference was, I wasn't drinking much with the meals as you had to pay for the drinks and I'm tight! (Accountant) I know my BB disappeared as I met a young lass who insisted on throwing her tongue down my throat every night - would someone do this if I had BB!?
Ever since I came off that ship and my BB returned i couldnt work out what was different - maybe it was the fact that I wasnt drinking with my meals..... it just could be......! Or it could be the stress levels, or maybe even the orange juice which was free (I don't normally drink that) that I had with my brekkie....
This is an interesting point. My dad never drinks a drop of any fluids when he eats. He eats really slowly and chews his food really thoroughly. It's quite ridiculous how long he takes to eat. But guess what... I have NEVER known him to have bad breath, not even in the morning. Half his teeth are falling out too. He eats a lot of fruit and I think that might help his digestion and keep the passage of food through his body well hydrated. So maybe by getting fluids in this way prevents him from diluting his stomach acids?
