My story...pls advise

Post by john_bb »

Hi all,
I tried several things before this...a week ago I started using Metronidazol as mouth wash. It worked well....But the bad breath is not completely gone...it was just a partial relief...People were still uncomfortable speaking to me..
As the metro rinse helped me I somehow concluded that the entire problem is due to the anaerobic bacteria in my mouth/ throat. For the past two days I started using Metronidazole 200 mg twice a day and on day 2 I spoke to people without much problems.
I had no side effects in the past 2 days. I am taking probiotics to maintain my colon bacteria.
How many of you got permanently rid of BB using Metronidazole and how many of you got BB when once you stopped using this antibiotic.
I suspect my wisdom teeth to be the source of bad breath. BTW I also have a white coated tongue and my breath turns bad when I am hungry or eat sweets.

I have this same issue! Even natural sugars in fruit mess me up and my mouth literally smells like poo. Or at least I think it does. I just avoid sugars in public to be safe and wait until I'm home to indulge. I find any sugars... sucrose, fructose, sucralose, even lactose the dairy sugar, is just a recipe for disaster. Because of this I looked into candida as a possibility, since sugars and carbs are known to make that worse. But I tried some natural cleansers and Fluconazole and found no relief. You ought to try some things that target candida if you haven't already. For white tongue have you tried scraping your tongue and then swallowing a spoonful of water with a capsule (or a half depending on how potent it is) of probiotics? I heard a story of a woman's tongue getting pinker each day until day 3 her white tongue was virtually gone. Also, I hear Threelac can work wonders for white tongue/candida. But it's sort of expensive.

At least you have an obvious lead. Unless there are severe complications, get rid of those teeth as soon as you can.

I'm afraid the answer to your question is going to be that no antibiotic has ever helped anyway, and the BB has always come back... Perhaps there's a single case or two where it worked, but from my experience on the boards here, it hasn't helped anyone.

Using Metronidazole as a mouthwash was considered to be a temporary treatment, and appeared to be working as long as you continued using it. The acceptance of the mouthwash compared to using it as a standard ingested antibiotic is that it focuses solely on the mouth area by only using it as a wash, so won't, or shouldn't have the negative side effects of ingesting antibiotics.

Also, something to consider is that the bacteria aren't originating in your mouth, but come from elsewhere, such as the digestive tract... That opens up a whole new can of worms for what your problem might be.

For now, I don't think you have anything to lose by cutting out the wisdom teeth.

You probably ought to continue the probiotics.. I haven't found much or any apparent help in probiotic use, including products like threelac, but supposing I did get rid of my BB, I'd still use probiotic products.
I'm thinking the reason IBS medicine, any kind of digestion aid, and probiotics don't do anything for me is because they aren't properly being absorbed into my body, perhaps due to that damned ileocecal valve.

I tried the capsule breaking trick...unfortunately it didnt work for me. My tongue is fairly pink in the front part...it is white on the back..on mornings when I scrape my tongue a thick white sludge comes out..do you think it is candida..as far I know candida appears like white spots inside the mouth...BTW I have long protruding taste buds...like a rough carpet...

Thanks Mike...I know that this is not the cure...but I dont want to leave any stone unturned...I am being optimistic...I have an appointment with oral surgeon soon...I will try to get rid of my wisdom tooth...I hope that I will be one among those who got cured by Metronidazole....

It seems as though, despite the metronidazole being a real breakthrough, that it may only be a temporary fix.
Most of us who have oral BB have a permanent white tongue and this is what's known as biofilm.
Biofilm makes bacterial colonisation very easy, hence the BB.
But the metronidazole is specifically targeting the anaerobes growing there, so the BB goes away. Once the antibiotics are stopped, the biofilm remains and provides a nice and dry (hence anaerobic) place to regrow any anaerobic bacteria that are left.

So for most of us, maybe the permanent solution is getting rid of the biofim - this appears to come from post-nasal drip.
PND could be caused by allergies or fungus or bacterial infection.

In my case i think it's fungus in the sinuses causing anaerobic bacteria in the mouth/tongue/throat. We are all different though, and I hope the metron is your cure, john.

potty_mouth, do you think it's the PND alone that does this, or do you think it's something contaminated in the PND, carried from the nose or sinuses.

I have a job believing it's only because a person has PND because I see lots of people who clearly have PND issues and yet no hint of BB.

Well I can't say for sure but I think that PND alone could be enough to give a white tongue. If that PND was not from infection (i.e. from allergies) then something else would have to create an imbalance of flora in the mouth, e.g. antibiotics.
If someone with allergic PND loses all their good oral bacteria from taking antibiotics, then candida could take hold.
Equally, if someone with bacterial PND does the same, once the antibiotics are gone it will be those bad bacteria constantly dripping down in great numbers which win the battle to re-colonise the tongue and mouth.

Did you get tested for fructose intolerance? Try a breath test with your gastroenterologist.

Unfortunately, if you find that you can't process sugars without upsetting your balance, indulging at home, is no better than eating sweets all day. As a matter of fact, I'd suspect sleeping after ingesting sugar would probably lead to more problems the next few days.

Fructose intolerance also is not limited to sweets. There are many foods, including vegetables that have fructose, and related compounds that will have the same effect as eating white sugar. It requires a serious change of diet, and even still you might find that your symptoms persist.
