Hi all,
I had bad breath ever since I was 13 years old. I am 26 now and still living with it. All the dentists I visited till today appreciated my teeth a lot and were unable to find the exact source of bad breath. I have a normal health and no other problems like PND, GERD etc.
The oral Xrays showed 4 impacted wisdom teeth out of which 2 erupted. My Dentist advised me to get them pulled as quickly as possible. but he said that my breath might not be improved as he was unable to see any swelling or infection.
But I did some study in this forum (YAY very useful) and elsewhere and found out that impacted wisdom teeth may cause bad breath.
Now all of a sudden I became so positive and hopeful at the same time worried about the pain and permanent damage due to the surgical extraction. I need some suggestions from you guys...
Will wisdom teeth extraction help me get rid of my bad breath. What precautions should I take after the surgery ??
John

john_bb, if you rub around the gum of any of these molars that these wisdom teeth have impacted into, can you smell anything?
If you can't smell anything on your finger and your dentist has advised you that there are risks of broken jaw or nerve damage then it's probably not worth it, expecially if your dentist doesn't think it's likely for this situation to be responsible for causing any odour problems.
But, also, you dont need to have any infection for impacted teeth to cause BB. Impacted teeth will create a pocket around the crown of any sunken and incompletely erupted teeth, where bacteria will produce a stinking discharge that will seep into your mouth, possibly without you even realizing.

Few weeks ago I always used to have stinky smell from the molars impacted by wisdom teeth. Then I used Metronidazole for a week and started using sonic toothbrush. Now I dont have smell from the molars but still have BB. My wisdom teeth were almost horizontal and impacted molars at all locations.halitosisux wrote:john_bb, if you rub around the gum of any of these molars that these wisdom teeth have impacted into, can you smell anything?

I contacted 3 dentists and all of them advised me to get them out. But they are not sure whether the BB would be cured. Do you still advise me to get my wisdom teeth out??

John, there are people, including myself, who risked the surgery of tonsillecomy, even though there isn't a single person on this forum who found it makes any difference to their BB, despite all the very similar symptoms of great big balls of tonsil stones produced and skank pouring out from them.
Yes, wisdom teeth removal can carry some risks, which your dentist will weighed up with you before they get extracted.
Please believe me, in just the same way that a small piece of food that starts to give off odour in a fridge can make you wonder what's dying in there every time you open the door, a dental problem like this can do exactly the same. Discharge from any area of gum can have a huge effect in the rest of your mouth and throat. Take it from me, cos that's exactly what happened in my case. I had 2 problematic wisdom teeth. I had one of them out in 2009 and it stopped my tongue odour completely. Just a tiny bit at the very far back from time to time, but I'm quite certain my last remaining horizontally impacted lower wisdom tooth is responsible for this remaining odour and I'm in the process of arranging to have this removed in hospital.
You are keeping those molars clean now, so it may be harder to detect any buildup of odour, but that doesn't mean to say that discharge is no longer being produced and pouring into your mouth. If you have pockets around partially erupted teeth, you need to get that dealt with, otherwise everything else you do against your BB could be completely pointless.
I had major production of tonsil stones too, while I still had tonsils, but I had them removed in the late 90s before I had any idea about my wisdom teeth issues.
If I am wrong in your case, then I'm sorry for giving you this advice. There are also a lot of people on this forum who have had their wisdom teeth removed and it hasn't helped, but there are far more people who it has helped and it turned out to be their cause.
BB has to have a reason in every case. The only way to find it is through trial and error and keeping an open mind on all possibilities.

thanks for your advise halitosissux. Can un-erupted wisdom teeth cause bad breath. One more interesting point....I have only one erupted wisdom tooth. When it erupted out of my gum..it looked very very black. It caused me pain for a week. There after I brushed very carefully and now it is white like other teeth. Even now I dont understand why it was black and why it is white now.halitosisux wrote:John, there are people, including myself, who risked the surgery of tonsillecomy, even though there isn't a single person on this forum who found it makes any difference to their BB, despite all the very similar symptoms of great big balls of tonsil stones produced and skank pouring out from them.

john, i was in a similar position to you and i just decided to get rid of all 4 of my wisdom teeth. i think only one of them was making any difference to my breath/taste though. i dont know if it has permanently cured my bad breath but my mouth certainly doesnt have the rotten taste that it had for about 10 months from late 08-late 09. do you have a bad taste in your mouth?
if i rubbed my finger around the impacted wisdom tooth and smelt my finger there wasnt really much of an odour. but when i brushed my teeth around that impacted wisdom tooth i certainly noticed an odd taste, which i never put two and two together it was the wisdom tooth until i came across stories on this forum. even after getting that wisdom tooth out i still had an odour in the area for about 2 weeks until new tissue grew. it was very weird
i still get some odour on my tongue, just below the V line. though the last couple of days i have noticed not much odour there. i go through periods where i can notice odour there and other times i cant notice much. i dont know why that is. my diet for example doesnt change much
if you are in a no lose situation like i felt i was, i will say just get them out. it was not very painful for me, even the hard one i had to go to hospital to get out

I have slight bad taste on my tongue all the time. Whenever I eat something sweet it turns worse. I noticed that the bad taste originates from the back of my tongue, the source could be my wisdom teeth.danger wrote:john, i was in a similar position to you and i just decided to get rid of all 4 of my wisdom teeth. i think only one of them was making any difference to my breath/taste though. i dont know if it has permanently cured my bad breath but my mouth certainly doesnt have the rotten taste that it had for about 10 months from late 08-late 09. do you have a bad taste in your mouth?

But with all these hints my surgeon said that wisdom teeth extraction may not improve my breath....I am really confused..
Hey danger did your breath improve after extraction. How many impacted wisdom teeth did you have and how many erupted ?

does you dent even detect your BB?
this is a question more of us need to fire at dents and Doc on every visit for what ever . Your dentist should know the difference between the odor of rotting tooth/ gums issues And the smell of a sinus or bowel issue pretty quickly .

Whenever I go to dentist I spend a lot of time brushing, flossing etc. That is I literally repeat my morning routine just before I go to the dentist. My breath is less detectable because of that. But once my dentist said that the odor is not from the gum disease. Few months ago a dentist asked me get a Diabetes diagnosis as he said that my oral cavity is perfect. Indeed I dont have any diabetes.
my top 2 wisdom teeth were fine i think and came through normally, but i just got them out anyway. my right bottom one came through about half way and was the one causing the worst taste. go down this link to the gum section and my tooth looked almost identical to the impacted one in that picturejohn_bb wrote:I have slight bad taste on my tongue all the time. and my left lower one was poking through a little bit and i could detect a bit of odour coming from it and i had to get it out in hospital. they were a bit reluctant at first but i lied and said it really hurt
my brother was the first one that told me my breath stunk and then not long after i started getting a horrible taste in my mouth. i have had no direct comments about my breath since i got my wisdom teeth out but i still heard the odd comment about somebody smelling something which makes me very paranoid it is me. i dont know if i am cured. i still very rarely talk in people's faces so that may be why i dont get reactions.
i still get a bit of odour on the same part of my tongue, which i dont know if it reflects on my breath. maybe i have always had a bit of older there and never realised. i only become obsessed with my tongue after being told i had bad breath
edit
also, when i first went to the dentist after being told and told him about my horrible taste in my mouth(i still couldnt mention bad breath to him) he never mentioned any problem with my teeth and said to drink salty water. it was only after hearing halitosisux's story and others on here that i found out myself. and then after the same dentist had taken the bad tooth out he said that is probaly causing the bad taste because it was inflamed(i think thats the word he used) alot. which kind of contradicted what he originally said
