New Member - Bad Breath Diagnosis

Post by Twilight »

Hello everyone,

I'm hoping, by relating my symptoms to yours, you can help me better diagnose the source of my breath problem. I know we are all going in different directions here with tonsil crypts on one end and digestive problems at the other, but I truly believe certain origins do produce different, though sometimes overlapping, symptoms that make them distinguishable.

Let me just say that I would rate my breath to be pretty bad. I believe it comes out of both my nose and mouth, although I have to be honest that I'm not certain whether the breath coming out my mouth or nose is stronger. I might be inclined to actually go with my nose, but that's only because I can never smell the breath coming out of my mouth. Of if I can, it doesn't smell bad. The breath coming out my nose I can only smell by placing my finger or something directly underneath it and timing it just right (think how ridiculous this would sound to anyone else...).

Anyway, I have post nasal drip, allergies which I'm getting treated for, and I've noticed that when I do the "lick hand test" it doesn't really smell at all. It will, however, smell when stick my finger way back into areas where tongue scrapers don't really reach, then there is a definite smell.

My reactions from people usually include sniffling and not much else. Does anyone else get this reaction? Apparently my breath causes other people noses to run? :(

Anywho, I really don't know where my problem lies though, as I know most of you are having a hard time figuring out your own source, but if you could point in some direction that would be nice because on the 11th of next month I'm going to see my ENT and I need to know what to ask him to do. Should I have him check my tonsils? I went there on the 11th of this month to get a CT and the results should be in on my next visit, I suppose that's when I'll tell him about the bb. Also, is there any tests I can have him do to measure the pH/ level anaerobic bacteria in my mouth?

Thanksyou.

You can actually buy your own pH strips and do your own acid testing. Thats the easy way. The HARD way is to go to a gastroenterologist, and do internal pH testing. You'll get a tube stuck down your nasal passage with a clip and needle attached at the end. The doc will use a vacuum to suck your esophagus tight enough so that the needle lodges to it, along with that clip (which is a pH sensor) That procedure does not feel good. When he's sure it won't dislodge (you don't want to swallow that thing) you're done.

You will wear a device like a beeper that talks to the clip. It measures pH level for 3 days. Eating will be unpleasant.

(while you are at it, might as well get manometry test by the same doctor. Similar process.)

Regarding the rest of your post, many of us in the same boat, and we have went to all the doctors possible. If it puts your mind at ease....
