Hiatus Hernia, exercising a possible cure?

I developed halitosis about 2-3 months ago and my life has been hell. the same jerks(falmily) who would insult and belittle me when it started is now saying "dude i can't smell your breath at all" i know for a fact they smelled it and it's true people around you will stop noticing it.

anyways 2 possible causes of HH is bending over excessively and heavy lifting. I do breathing exercises and learned that certain exercises made my halitosis extreme to the point the neighbors smell it (i'm an extremely heavy deep breather) it's possible my breathing exercises caused my HH, i did do lots of breathing exercises where i bend forward and squeeze my ribcage area.

reading about HH earlier I learned that it can also be caused my poor muscle contraction in an area. my left ribcage has much poorer muscle development compared to the right and that's where my halitosis is coming from. one time i did this exercises and stuck my chest out, that day my halitosis was gone untill i got tired and started slumping on the chair.

my solution is to not bend over and do exercises where i bend back to strenghten the abdominal muscles. exercises like bridging, superman, and a few others like standing leaning back or sitting. hope this helps.

I'm confused - which one's help get rid of BB??? My hubby can't smell my bb anymore either - and I know I have it. My dr. said I wasn't a candidate for surgery, but I am going to insist that I get the surgery done - I haven't told them about the mental anguish it has caused me. That might change their mind...

Greenman, hi.. please tell me about your Hiatal Hernea and relation to your bad breath.
My father has an HH problem ( no bad breath ). I have never been checked for HH, but I do have stress and digestive problems. Just curious about HH and what info you can give about possible relationship between it and bb.
Thanks.

i do believe that I have hiatul hernia since i have this weird feeling on the left side of my ribcage/chest. doing some breathing exercises made my smell worse and some made it better. i beleive it's a combination of smoking ciggarettes, frequently bending over and heavy lifting. i also read somwehre else that weakened muscles of that area can cause hiatul hernia.

so since some exercises helped it go away and can also make it worse. i figured that doing exercises which bend the spine back would help, and went overboard with it being a cure. so any exercise to strenghten the muscles around the diaphram should help.

here's a link for more info.

my post above explains quite a bit of it.

the fact that HH causes the esophagus and stomach to be open allows the air to come up causing bad breathing. i also think that because it's open that when you breathe in air it goes to the stomach and comes out smelling much worse.

Are you planning to find out if you actually have HH..? Would be interesting to know for sure.

there are rare cases where people will have bad breath as a result of a HH and the valve constantly being open. But these people dont have the classic bb, but rather their breath smells like burp. This makes sense as when you burp you are opening up your stomach for everyone to smell, and if this is always open then thats what it will smell like. Kind of like garbage. I doubt anyone here has this because a doctor would have picked up on that.

yes I am, these past few days though I feel that my BB has gotten better but i feel a different sensation on the left side of my neck going down to my stomach area. when i drink water it is also a different sensatoin. i'll update more on this and seeing a profesional for HH.

if that is true then the only explanation for my BB is Zenkers Diverticulum. here's a link to Mar11's thread about it. viewtopic.php?t=735

since my BB isn't always on and I notice that it gets worse when someone else is in the room that gives me tension.

but when your valve is constantly open, some of the undigested food will sit right above the stomach opening and produce a smell much worse than a burp, especially overnight.

FYI - there are chiropractors that will push the stomach back into place. I went to one when I was 6 mo pregnant - don't think it worked. It was difficult for her with the baby in the way and all. I may go see her again. She only charged $25. But, I'm not sure that the valve will close when the tummy goes back into place.

I'm not sure you can "push" the valve back in. The problem is that the opening has eroded by gastric acid and or expanded by stress. Whenever you swallow, the valve opens to accept the semi-digested food, then closes to keep the contents in the stomach for digestion with gastric acid. With an HH, the opening doesn't constrict enough to keep the food and acid down. The longer this situation exists, the more succeptible the lower esophagus is to harmful acids. So, the opening is then tightened by a Gastroenterologist. The knot may or may not weaken after time, and the doctor might be able to re-tighten it.

I was told that you can be back at work in 2 days, but I'm still a bit shaky about the thought of twisting my esophagus around itself.

Would an endoscopy show someone having HH?
