Nasal stuff

Post by chomp »

Something strange happened yesterday. Last weekend my throat started itching (I don't have tonsils) and a few days later I started feeling a little sick. So, two days in a row I irrigated my sinuses with salt water using the water pik. The first day I did the irrigation (did this in the morning) and when I went to bed in the night I felt my nose very stuffy and could not breathe properly. The second day I irrigated the nose in the morn and when I went to bed in the night the congestion was so bad that I just could not breathe. Started getting a lot of mucus too, so finally I put on sleep right strip which usually helps me but it did nothing. So, with the breathe right still in place I pushed the pillow up and kind of elevated my head up a bit. A few seconds later the nose started feeling better and then suddenly something popped and some thin mucus came out (I was able to start breathing normal). At the same time my husband asked me if I either burped or flatulated because he said he smelt some bad gas. Has anyone every experienced anything like this before? I did not smell anything. Could it be bacteria in my sinuses that is causing the stench? My doc says it is my gastritis, so maybe I should mention this to him.

This is so strange because I've had this for a few weeks now, but only when I do a nasal irrigation. I have found that the mucus has gotten abit sticky which makes blowing my nose much more difficult to do. This has only happen to me at nights, so I have reduced my night time nasal irrigation. I also found getting up and going to another room in the house does help abit.

The other thing with nasal irrigation is that sometimes the water stays in your sinus cavity, mixes with the mucus, which then looks abit yellow the next day. I sometimes have to hang my head in a weird position over the bed looking side ways at the floor. This works sometimes, but not always.

I do have allergies, so this could be an added complication at nights.

April, this is so funny because it sounds like we have a identical problem. Not all of the water drains out completely and it does become yellowish. I usually irrigate the sinuses in the day time and not too close to the time when I go to bed. Soon after I irrigate I bend from waist down and kind of lift my head up like I am looking at the underside of a shelf or desk and then stand up straight, this gets a lot of water out immediately. Another trick I have found is to depress the back of my tongue with my index and middle fingers after irrigating and it drains out a lot of water.

I have non allergic rhinitis.
