Bismuth for halitosis

Post by oneway »

Hi all,

Looks like bismuth compounds might help with halitosis. This might explain that anytime I take pepto bismol, my BB disappears. I always thought that it was because it "settled" my stomach. Now it looks like apart from attacking H.pylori, bismuth compounds can actually help with halitosis. Scroll down in the following blog to read a post on bismuth or bizmuth as she calls it.

Looks like someone is also coming up with chewing gum in the US, hopefully, pretty soon.

More info on use of bismuth compounds and Flagyl to cure halitosis...

Here's a bismuth compound being sold as an "internal deodorizer"

http://www.devrom.com/

Anyone tried it?

Has anyone else found this to be the case? The googling I did on the subject that this stuff only works on the directly opposite side of the digestive system..

H.pylori? Ok, lets take that out of the equation. theres a very simple test that can be performed at you local hospital to determine whether you have h.pylori or not (they just take a swab from you mouth and test it). Most of the people here have had this done - with a negative result. H.pylori is not part of most folks problem here.

Whatever about 'bismuth', Flagyl has been bandied about as a potential solution for years (see the current thread 'metronidazole' - the generic name for flagyl). Ultimately, everyone comes back with a report of it not being a solution - although it might help a little initially.

Its been said a lot of times already... H.pylori IS NOT ALWAYS DETECTABLE.
Infection may be symptomatic or asymptomatic (without visible ill effects). It is estimated that up to 70% of infection is asymptomatic.
The combination of tetracycline and metronidazole is effective in the eradication of a wide spectrum of aerobes and anaerobes. Triple therapy will eradicate many possible candidate infections making it unclear whether the therapy [of halitosis] was successful directly as a result of it's action on H. pylori or because another organism was eliminated.
One can test for H. pylori infection with blood antibody or stool antigen tests, or with the carbon urea breath test (in which the patient drinks 14C- or 13C-labelled urea, which the bacterium metabolizes producing labelled carbon dioxide that can be detected in the breath), or endoscopy to provide a biopsy sample for testing for the presence of urease "rapid urease test", histology or microbial culture.

None of these test methods are completely failsafe. Blood antibody tests, for example, range from 76% to 84% sensitivity. Medication can affect H. pylori urease activity and give "false negatives" with the urea-based tests.

Not everyone, so far it was austuser and oceanside ;) What didnt help someone doesnt mean it wont help someone else. Also it did help jonnyath.
Bad breath for each of us has different cause. For someone it might be h.pylori, for some chronic sinusitis or tonsilitis or whatever.
Also dont forget thats its a triple antibiotic therapy, not JUST metronidazole. The other 2 antibiotics are used with the metronidazole at the same time for a reason.

Interesting. I did not know this. In my own case, I have had 3x h.pylori tests done so the chances of an inaccurate result are greatly reduced.
REf. metronidazole

A good few of the regular callers to breath4u/yahoo groups have tried it - some finding initial success but ultimately, it failed as a treatment.

It did? When did he start using it? Can he come back and confirm that its still working? Furthermore, he needs to come back in 6 months and tell us its still working - then it might be significant and we should be looking at metronidazole again.

Yes, its a good point and I am concious of it. However, there is so much misinformation bandied about about treatments (largely due to commercial interests) and this forum gives us the opportunity to check out solutions and confirm either way. Whilst there may not be one particular cause , if a good number of people are coming back and reporting that a treatment has failed, then thats the end of it.

We have an opportunity here - We are all isolated with our problem but brought together on this forum for the betterment of us all. Knowledge is power - we are effectively an online research group. I just find it frustrating if people are going to the expense (in time and money) of trying a treatment that has been well and truely tested without success. Don't mean to come across as negative - I just want us to harness the power we have here and work together to achieve a successful conclusion to our plight.

Ok - well that may well make it a unique treatment - which is worthwhile...lets see.

He came here after being cured.
I'll quote a part of his post:
jonnyath wrote:Two years ago bitterly complained to my new doctor and he prescribed a course of Metronidazole tablets which are 200mg doses. There are 21 tablets in the container and you take one morning noon and night for 1 week.

Problem solved so simply after so long.
So its been ~2 years ;)

----- That is why I thought too until I read about how bismuth might help with halitosis. Whenever I chew pepto bismol tablets or even take a swig of the liquid, my bb disappears for hours, even with eating and drinking. I used to take a swig of this this stuff before parties to "settle" my stomach, because I am a shy person, and I remember it used to make my BB disappear for a few hours. I honestly never made the connection until I read that post on the blog yesterday. I was very excited and had to share.

You're right though, about everything not working for everyone. Just thought I'd share what I learned.

I hope this is legitimate but I suppose I must be a natural skeptic. There are a few more of you here that are trying it - maybe that will give us the answer ultimately - or maybe the triple combo of drugs that was suggested - its a new departure and maybe it has more value as a treatment.
