It seems there is a belief that people with suppress immune system, lacking kidney function, and diabetes suffer from halitosis. I have a suppress immune system due to kidney transplant and all I can say is that while going for post kidney transplant check ups I was the only one in the waiting room with bb and there were many kidney and liver transplant patients. Also when I was on dialysis I was the only one in the clinic with bb and there were about 20 to 25 patients doing dialysis, all with fresh breath, how do I know because they would rotate us so ever time I would end up between different patients. I know a lady who's teeth are separating due to diabetes and her doctor told her she will end up losing her teeth and should just have them pulled out so it means her teeth are getting lose and there should be pockets and yet she has NO BB!

TeamZissou No I did not had bb before I lost my kidney, I did started getting bb when my kidney was in mid function, then when I was about to get ready for dialysis my bb became cronic. This is the reason I really believed that after this kidney was transplanted my bb problem would disappear and I was actually more happy expecting that then getting off dialysis. What a disappointment

halihope,
I was just wondering if you'd be willing to share a little more background info, if you haven't already in another thread. I'm always interested in trying to understand exactly where the BB started, so we might find some potential causes and ways to fix them.
What initially caused your kidney problems, diabetes? Is or was your immune system suppressed because of medication given to you to allow for the transplant, or did this start before because of another condition? And lastly, is your immune system back at a more normal level, or are you still on medication to avoid your body rejecting the kidney?
Also, do you have your tonsils and/or any GERD symptoms?
Thanks for any info you can provide, and sorry if you've already discussed this elsewhere.

TeamZissou I am glad to discuss my health history, here goes.
When I was 11 or 12 years old I suffered from mumps and I had the chills and because of it I spent a lot of time exposed to the sun. At 18 my kidneys where chronically ill and I end up on dialysis, NO BB, doctors told me that as a child I probably suffered a strong infection and this destroyed my kidneys slowly, (the mumps?)
I did dialysis for 3 years and got a kidney transplant and was on medications to suppress my immune During that time I visited my dentist and he told me I needed deep cleaning, my hubby did told me my breath smelled, but I never saw any reactions from people. After deep cleaning my breath was fresh. After 18 years and two pregnancies my kidney begun to failed at which point my bb started, not to bad just only if people got very close, face to face, but as the kidney kept failing people begun offering me mints and such, when I started dialysis my bb was strong and that's when I started noticing people making faces, putting finger under nose ect. this time hubby did not and does not smell my bb. After 6 years on dialysis I got a kidney transplant but my bb is still with me. I am taking drugs to suppress my immune system, (prograf and prednisone), also a drug (gleevec) to maintain my leukemia in remission, calcitriol to lower my parathyroid, magnasium and phosporous, multivitamins, iron and zantac to avoid GER which I don't suffer from only if I eat certain foods. I do have pnd, specially from the left nostril and when I brush my teeth and tilt my head to the left to reach the wisdom teeth I sometimes get a bad smell coming from my throat on that side. Dentist days I don't need deep cleaning and no pockets and wisdom teeth are aligned fine BUT sometimes I wonder if he is lying because he doesn't want to deal with my messy health. Every time I go for teeth cleaning I have to take antibiotics an hour before to avoid any bacteria going to my fake hip replacement. As you can see I am not an easy case. Thank you for taking the time to read this, let me know what you think.

Halihope,
Sorry to hear about your health problems. It sounds like you have a lot going on.
Maybe it might be worth getting a second opinion from a new dentist, just to make sure your other dentist isn't brushing you off, like you suggested. He might not be, but I guess it can't hurt if your BB was cured through dental intervention the last time.
It's interesting that your BB problems began again when your kidneys began to fail, but that it hasn't resolved itself after you've had the transplant. It doesn't sound like it's necessarily immune related, because it began before you started the drugs to supress your immune system. I'm not sure what to make of that.
It sounds like a second opinion from another dentist might be a good place to start, just to make sure.
