Sour breath gone...possibly from acid reducers

Post by hopeful »

I've been having really strong and yucky sour breath for some time now(at least last eight months) and just recently started taking an acid reducer/antacid. I've been gaging my breath based on the wrist lick and that aweful sour smell has been pretty consistent. Since taking the acid reducer/antacid though(have been taking it for 4 days now), my sour breath/taste has disappeared completely. Now when I lick my wrist, I smell nothing(unless I eat or drink something with a strong flavor). I still have bb but now it's just not as potent. I've always suspected my bb stems from digestive issues and now by taking these acid reducers it seems that my theory can be partly confirmed. Now I'm really looking forward to my appointment with the gastroenterologist next week to have a barium xray done. So anybody out there who has sour breath/saliva, give this a try.

I only bought the bottle because it stated that it provides relief to a "sour stomach." I never even knew our stomachs could be sour(never heard that term before). I don't have any heartburn which these products seem to be more directed towards so if I hadn't read the sour stomach ad, I wouldn't have even noticed it. The name of the product I'm using is Pepcid Complete Acid Reducer + Antacid with Dual Action, Berry Blend Flavored and can be picked up at most drugstores or grocery stores in north america(got mine at Safeway). It comes in a bottle of either 25 or 50 chewable tablets.

Idk about you, but for me the only thing this did for me is giving me 2 hr trips in the bathroom at a time (MAJOR constipation)

I read about possible problems with constipation when taking these types of products but everything seems fine so far. I'm only using this as a temporary solution until I see the gastroenterologist. They don't recommend taking antacids and acid reducers for more than two weeks at a time but I think this may not apply to people who clearly have more chronic problems(like ourselves).

Okay, that lasted for all of a week. Acid reducers have stopped working. Sour taste in mouth is back...yuck!

i'm not sure what "sour breath" is exactly.. i think i have an idea..

I've had that taste in my mouth this past week.. Back in the throat.

I'm starting to return to my original idea that there are "tonsil stones" being formed way past the tonsils themselves, beyong the epiglottis.

Yesterday and today, I hacked and hacked.. Stuck out my tongue while creating a suction in my mouth.. They I started hacking away with my efforts focused on the back of the throat.. Some really tiny stones came out, and I don't see how they could be coming from my tonsil crypts (which I swab out every morning and night)

The smell was what I might call sour, and definitely offensive. It didn't smell fecal or anything like regular tonsil stones do.. My best udnerstanding is that these stones smell like the breath of a kid I know at school.. His breath is pretty bad, and these stones are the purest form what I know his breath to be.. I could be inches from a stone that's just one millimeter across and the smell is so strong.. Especially if you crush it.

Anyway, I've been able to get a few of these tiny things out but it's really putting stress on my throat. I remember doing this in the past, back when I had some huge tonsil stones.. Sometimes small traces of blood would fly out with the stones. >.<

Either the suction and hacking actions are drawing out tonsil stones from deep within the tonsil crypts, undisturbed for weeks or months... Or there is a gatehring of small stones down in my throat... I imagine there is less wrong with my throat itself and more having to do with PND constantly feeding small crevices with nasty bacteria.... Ew...

Of course I don't know how it smells since no one I know has bb! I just assume it smells sour/horrid based on the tongue lick wrist test and by the general taste I have in my mouth. I think it's related to acid reflux because no amount of brushing gets rid of it.

I wish I could hack out stones. I get them accidentally once or twice a week at the most. The only thing I hack is sour bad chemical tasting mucous. I guess some people call it tonsil juice.

I cutting down on the hacking though. It isn't good for the throat. i know what you mean about bleeding. My mouth isn't filled with blood, but if i hack too hard, I can get blood spots. Also, after hacking in the morning, a few hours later, and my throat area feels inflamed, dry and the bad taste is still there... possibly worse.

I had a few tests and scans done at that particular area to see if there was a stuctural issue, and they told me my thyroid was inflammed. They said it was irrelevant to my tonsil/BB problem.... but I want a 2nd opinion on why my thyroid is suddenly f'd up.

I wonder if it is my tonsils... That tonsil juice... keeps coming. How much of it can be trapped? It seems that it is being constantly produced... Like this is the fluid that my body makes instead of clean mucous. I'm thinking if I get these tonsils taken out, I'll still produce this sour taste.

You should really get your tonsils out.
I mean everybody with some bad smell coming from them should immediately get a tonsillectomy - it will definitely help.

i plan on going to a doctor i used to go to for allergies and asking about tonsil removal..

what i fear the most is that the dr. may refuse ..

To those who have had their tonsils taken out, what did you say to your dr. before he okayed the situatioin? Did the Dr. refuse at all, or was hesitant?

I went to see my doctor when I was sick - I had an infection in the throat, nose and the tonsils and I felt like there is a bad smell from the tonsils (I haven`t smelled anything bad from them before and never found any tonsil stones). I thought that visiting the doctor when I`m healthy and just complaining from BB won`t be enough (it should be of course but doctors don`t care too much about BB itself as you know).

So I went there and explained the situation and I mentioned BB from tonsils as one of the many symptoms I had. Then she pushed the tonsils with a tool and we could both smell something bad. She also found some tonsil stones.

Then I asked what about removing the tonsils and she said it could be the best thing to do.
However she didn`t remove the adenoids which I don`t like but she checked the couple of times and said they are OK.

I think in my case it was easy. I guess some doctors need to be persuaded more.

my latest doctor was eager to remove my adenoids. He said 75% that is the root cause. He was almost trying to persuade my through exaggeration.

Not sure if he's just trying to get the most out of my insurance, since checking the little things take more of his time than it's worth.

I'm just worried about the healing time.
