anti-candida diet can also causes bad breath?

Post by seanlee1980 »

So I've been on the anti-candida diet and it's been great but I have noticed something strange. I believe my breath is fresher but there is still an odor and bad taste. I was craving a big juicy burger one day so I just said F it, let's eat one. I did and I expected my bad breath to flare up the next day but surprisingly it was fresh and I didn't have any bad taste. So of course I said to myself "WTF". I start googling something and then came across atkins diet causes bad breath. It's because when you're eating less carbs, your body produces ketones which causes bad breath. Well the anti-candida diet is almost like the Atkins diet in which you eliminate carbs. Therefore, I believe a small amount of carbs (bread, rice) should be introduced along with the anti-candida diet.

Note that I am not saying anti candida diet is bad for breath. It has improved my problem with bad breath. My theory is that elimintating carbs can also cause bad breath. Also, my observation during the diet has been that the more green vegetable you eat, the better your breath will be.

"Bad breath (halitosis) is an unfortunate side effect of low-carbohydrate diets. Here's what happens: the diet causes your body to burn stored fats for fuel rather than carbohydrates. As the fat burns, chemicals called ketones build up in the body and are released through the breath and urine. Unfortunately, they're smelly."

Hey seanlee,

Totally agree with you on the whole eliminating carbs thing as a possible cause of bad breath. That's why i've never really been an advocate of any diet that says you should eliminate them. All those diets are too strict in my opinion. I would say I eat a fairly large amount of carbs everyday, because I eat things such as oats, brown rice, and tropical fruits. I also eat lot of protein too. And I even eat some dairy like yogurt and fermented milk.

Although you did mention something about eating bread, which I am still hesitant to add back into my diet. One of the ingredients in bread is yeast, which is what i'm trying to avoid, so I'd prefer to get my carbs from other sources.

All in all, I'd say the best way to improve your health in general is to eat a healthy balanced diet, exercise regularly, drink plenty of water, get plenty of sleep, etc etc...You know, the things doctors have been telling people to do for decades. :)
