Severe halitosis - help!
Hi everyone
I'm having a problem with really bad halitosis that is interfering with my social life.
I have year-round allergies (dust) and a constant post-nasal drip. I do use a spray to counter it (beutacourt aqueous), but the post-nasal drip is still very apparent, I can sometimes even feel it dripping down the back of my throat.
I can brush my teeth, and my tounge, but within 20 minutes I have a bitter taste in my mouth, and disgusting breath. By that time a layer of a white stuff on the top of my tounge has started to appear. It seems to appear from the rear of the tounge, and can be scraped away by brushing with the back of my toothbrush, but will re-appear within 20 minutes.
I do not have any dental problems, drink a fairly average amount of water, do not smoke, and do not eat much garlic/cheese. I eat a lot of fruit, but still quite often suffer from sore throats. Is that from the post-nasal drip? Or could it be my tonsils?
Come to think of it, could the tonsils be the root of the problem? Or is it the post-nasal drip? Or the white (bacteria?) stuff on my tounge?
I would be very greatful for any help.
Thanks,
Kriypty

you're gonna have to start with the basics.
Forget about cleaning your tongue simply with toothpaste. You will need to get a "tongue gel" which you can find anywhere on the internet. Breezecare.com, therebreath.com etc.
You can opt to use this tongue gel with a tongue scraper or the very popular TUNG brush (do a google on it) which with give your mouth and tongue the best possible chance of hygene.
After this, you should read through the various topics on this site thouroughly so you have an idea about your (and our) problem.
but start with cleaning your tongue properly.

austuser is right, get a TUNG brush BUT DON'T get anything from Breezecare or Therabreath, they ain't worth shit. Just get the TUNG gel, there's even a small sample with every tung brush if you want to try it.
1. If they cause of your bad breath are allergies, consult an allergist and find some treatment.
2. Go to an ENT and Check your septum and your nose in general in case there is some obstruction or some other problem. He'll shove a cable camera into one of your nostrils and push it in enough to see everything.
3. One nice thing to do would be checking your health overall, just to rule out other things.

No they're not the same at all. I've tried the threabreath gel and it tastes like shit plus it does nothing. Besides no therabreath gel costs less than 10$, while the TUNG gel costs only $5.austuser wrote:the toungue gel from breezecare and therabreath is the same as the one you get with the TUNG brush. Im not saying get anything else from those companies, but their tongue gels are perfectly fine.
i use breezecares Breath Guard Gel but at AUD$30 i agree it is probably too much. But it works very well to clean the tongue. and unlike other tongue gels that contain stabilised chlorine dioxide you dont need to let it soak in for two minutes to work.
but if the TUNG brush gel is cheap then go for it. It is unlikely that a tongue gel will solve your problem alone, but it might

You don't need to let TUNG gel soak either and I'm pretty sure it doesn't have chlorine dioxide. Its different than the other gels it seems. You just squeeze a small amount of it on the brush, clean your tongue and spit out then rinse with water and thats all.
Plus TUNG brush + TUNG gel are the ONLY things that worked for me (its not the gel doing the work, i would say its 70% because of the brush) and they are by FAR the best and easiest things to use. Its something EVERY bb sufferer that has bb coming from the tongue HAS to buy.

just for my curiosity, what are the ingredients of the tung gel....i cant seem to find it on their site?
the regular breezecare oral gel is:
Ingredients: Sorbitol, Hydrated Silica, Purified Water, Aloe Barbadensis Gel, Glycerin, Stabilised Chlorine Dioxide, Tetrapotassium Pyrophosphate, Xylitol, Tetrasodium Pyrophosphate, Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate, Carrageenan, Sodium Fluoride, Zinc Gluconate, Essential Oil of Peppermint, Natural Flavour, Sodium Benzoate
and the breath guard gel:
Ingredients: Sorbitol, Hydrated Silica, Purified Water, Xylitol, Glycerin, Peppermint Oil, Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate, Xanthan Gum, Potassium Pyrophosphate, Zinc Gluconate, Propolis Extract, Sodium Fluoride, Sodium Pyrophosphate, Sodium Citrate, Citric Acid, Sodium Benzoate, Sucralose, Aloe Barbadensis, Grape Seed Extract.
i find that they both work equally, but the breath guard gel doesnt require the 2 minute window for it to work.
The fact is, they all get your tongue clean. but they dont let your tongue STAY clean. So i suppose it makes more sense to go with the cheapest one. i havent tried TUNG gel yet.

i meant you need to read up on all the various threads on this site, as there are many explanations, theories and treatments that work for different people. You need to educate yourself about your problem. So spend a sunday reading through all the recent and not so recent topics so you have as much knowledge as all of us based on our experiences.
No, you can't buy tongue gels in supermarkets. Reading through this site, you will quickly learn that there is a lot that the general public doesnt know about bad breath i.e that commercial products are not really designed to treat halitosis, rather they only keep your teeth clean. Gum wont help with a chronic problem and neither will anti-bacterial mouthwash.
The specialty halitosis products themselves, which are usually only available from the internet, dont even work well for most people. you need to do research and try different things that may help you.
